how do componet speakers work???

Basically, they're comprised of 4 speakers altogether. Your midrange (and almost midbass if designed well) drivers which generally mount lower in the door or kickpanel to provide good 'floor' in your system and then your 'satellite' mounted tweeters which you can put at the top of the door panel, in the dash or along the windshield pillars. They're seperated to create more accurate staging in your vehicle, since higher frequencies are more 'directional', you want them up higher, free of objects blocking their projection (such as legs, seats, etc etc).

I've been reading PaulD's posts and he's fairly knowledged, I'm sure he can explain this further, but that's the basics of it.

actually, the real difference is the quality of the drivers ...... manufacturers usually don't put their best drivers in an axial setup (for whatever reasons). A component set usually comes with a good passive crossover network of at least 12 dB/octave, an axial speaker has a cap on tweeter to act as a 6 dB/oct filter and uses the woofers natural mechanical limitations in upper frequencies as it's crossover. A component set is easily biamped using an active crossover network, most axial speakers cannot be biamped.

P.S. ...... for best sound quality, it is usually not a good idea to seperate the midrange and tweeter by more than a few inches.

No kiddin? I'd not heard that before.. is it simply for phasing reasons?
Maybe you can take a look at my post concering installation in my Accord and offer some advice on location/pods/etc etc.

so do component speakers placed in different areas work better then just regular speakers??

the problem with separating speakers is phase shifts ..... ideally, a single speaker source would recreate the whole audio spectrum
