Hyde finally Street Races ...

In an effort to prove that Hyde is not a "drag queen", I entered Hyde this past weekend in an SCCA Solo 1 Hill Climb Event.
This is a real street race. It is on public roads and 100% legal.
The SCCA closes off roads to do these events.
It is "solo" racing, meaning one car goes through at a time. You race against the clock and your times are compared to others in your class.

Pagoda Hill climb: Day 1 Results
Previous Hill Record for SM2 was 64 seconds.
Fabio (yellow Mr2) set a new hill record for our class of 61 seconds.
Travis (red Mr2) had a best run (I think) of 66 seconds
White MK1 (don't the guy's name off hand ..nice fellow though )
My 4 runs, in order, were:
73 seconds (course was wet and I was, quite honestly, scareed )
67 seconds
66 seconds
65 seconds
The thing that has me excited is the I know exactly where I improved on each run.
Fabio's expereince and sticky tires are winning over Hyde's HP.
I am running 20 psi of boost, and Fabio is running 14 psi in a TD06.
Travis is also on a TD06 ... not sure what boost level.
Here are some pics my wonderful girlfriend Cindy took today:

Pagoda Hill climb: Day 2 Results
Wow ... what a day!
I really got into the groove with the hill today. It was the most amazing racing experience I have ever had. I really got into a zone.
Imagine: topping 110 mph on public backroads up a hill knowing there is no oncoming traffic and that the "course" is all yours.
I am addicted.
I reflect on what I expereinced this weekend and it was almost insane, if it wasn't so controlled.
... back to results:
Fabio set a new hill record for the SM2 class of a low 61 seconds today ... on his last run of the day he bettered himself with a 60.99!!!!!! Amazing run.
After analyzing my runs and figuring out where I was lacking courage, I located several spots on the hill that I was lifting when my foot should have been planted.
I also upped my boost. I managed back-to-back 61.9s and 61.7s.
**note #1 - I was on street tires, Fabio was on Khumo race tires.
He was running at TD06 @ 14 psi.
I was running my T3T4 at 22.5-23.5 psi!
It was an interesting battle of expereince & tires vs horsepower.
... and he deservingly won!
*note #2 - Fabio ended a squirrels day in the most awful way
Anyway, MR2s dominated the day.
Fabio and I finished one two in SM2.
A MK1 NA won his class and a MKI SC also won their class.
MR2s did well
Fabio and I got awesome trophy plaques (I'm in the black, Fabio is in the blue):

Yeah, my goal with Hyde has always been to build a balanced car that can compete in many arenas.
If I wanted a drag only car, I would have chosen a much larger turbocharger :)
I easily had the most HP of any of the MR2s. I have at least 80 rwhp on Fabio and he was the next closest to me.
He has raced that hill many times and he was on sticky tires ... which was plenty for him to hold me off.
In August we race teh same hill over a longer course, I am hoping to catch and pass him then. We'll see;)

... for those of you who get a rush from illegal street racing, you can't imagine what it's like when you are actually allowed to go balls-to-the-walls on public roads.
115 mph in the oncoming lane to set yourself up for a blind turn .... mmmmmmm

fabio needs long blond hair. i am envious! nice runs there, you really improved yourself towards the end.
you really upped the boost towards the end!!! you have a more well rounded turbo, i hope to see you kick his tail when you get more practice and better tires on.

Here is a video of one of my launches on the hill.
Now before you critique the "launch" realize this is not a drag race start ... you are not timed until you get passed the 2nd line.

you have no idea how jealous i am over here... there haven't been scca hillclimbs in the Az chapter for... like 27 years!
can u send me the link for the next one? i might have to trailer the mk1.5 out there...
and what tires were you running? i'm assuming he was on the v700 victoracers (which ARE still street tires ;))
and carrrunttt, have you ever run mingus mountain?

They are the victoracers. I sold them to him last summer :(
wow that vid was insane. .... I've been in safer street races...
Yes! and No!
Yes it is insance. No you would not be safer in a street race. Not by a long shot.
suprised they let u run with the tops off...nice versitile car u got ther
It's required. T-tops out and windows down.
It's less glass to get in your eyes in case of an accident.
.... totally different thinking than drag racing where you have to have your T's on and windows up.
How's Hyde's doing? I noticed you took the death counter out of your sig.
Hyde is 100% great. He will be racing at Summer Slam this weekend in New Jersey (Englishtown). July 5th he goes under the knife for an install of an RMR intake manifold and Walbro Fuel Pump. Looking for 335-350 rwhp ... other big mods coming later this year.
The Hyde death pool is still on. It's on the MR2 board.
It is not in my siggy because I bought my own Web domain and the hosting company does not allow any type of "gambling or lottery" and I did not want to risk getting booted.
If memory serves, the pool is at $36 and the current mileage is at 197,800.

I am kinda bummed that I overly "braked" for the most dnagerous turn. I was concentrating on making sure I could drive the car home rather than pushing that turn harder. Oh well.
Results are here:
http://www.pahillclimb.org/Schedule.htm
There wree 69 entrants.
Fabio was 12th fastest.
I was 13th fastest.
8 of the folks ahead of us were single-seater open wheel cars.
2 of them were VW Bugs (on in GT4 and one was "special")
The car left was a national record setting Neon, but it was unfortunately totalled on Sunday

I just saw the launch video, and I must say, your MR2 sounds beastly!
And I find it ironic that he ended up beating you with your own tires...I get a kick out of that. :p
That video of Fabio crashing is insane! Just because its legal doesn't make it safer than a race on the streets, though. It may be less reckless in the sense that you are only risking your limbs in a SOLO event, but it is definitely not safer...

This is why I would say it is safer ...
... we do not have the risks of pedestrians, other cars and oncoming traffic. We do have animals ~ Fabio destroyed a squirrel on Sunday.
... we are wearing 2 layer-fire proof racing suits, shoes, gloves and SA rated helmets.
... we also have roll bars, 5-point harnesses and arm restraints.
... paramedics are ready at different parts of the course if they are needed.
You saw Fabio's crash?
He walked away without a scratch ... not a scratch.
Do you think that would have been the same outcome in his "street set up"?

Duly noted. However, it is not often that a racer is cutting the apex of a corner at insane fast speeds or hitting 110 on the twisties...
I guess I worded my last post incorrectly, MOST races on the street are not quite as extreme, but extreme events (such as your SOLO hillclimb) call for extreme safety measures.
Anyways, nice runs, and your a brave man for pushing your pride and joy car that hard through the twisties....personally, I'd push my SCCA-spec Miata (cheap weekend racer) MUCH harder through a course than I would my new Z06 Corvette(expensive weekend racer).
....theoretically, of course, if I had a Z06 or a SCCA-spec Miata....

compared to late night *illegal* hill climbs, and backroads runs, yeah, this is way safer.
if you want to compare street racing, but only consider straight line street racing, then you're blind.
b/c street racing doesn't just mean going fast in a straight line.
you've never pushed your car above legal speeds running through the twisties?
yeah...
