Well, i was driving home the other day and thought to myself... Why the hell would i spend so much more on the STI and take the difference in the price range and spend it on modding a 04 wrx. Wow i am so smart!!!!! i was so glad that i changed my mind and now not waste all that money.
What do u guys think of this idea, what would yo do.
Does anyone know what is the est sounding exhaust for the 04 rex... i want something that has a deep rumble in idle and when reving-accelerating. i DO NOT WANT something that sounds like a rice fart can! i was thinking of maybe the HKS carbon fiber one but n e otther suggestiong would be nice. Thnx

Well, a modded WRX doesn't have the 6-speed transmission, the DCCD, the front LSD, the more comfy seats, the $700 each BBS wheels, or an engine that would still be under factory warranty at 300HP for starters.

i dunno.....i'd rather just have an STI. but i totally understand what you're thinking. the sti is definately build for more extreme punishment and it's just a bad ass car out of the gate. you can make the regular WRX just as fast (in the 1/4 mile) with really not all that much money (about say $3000-5000), but it's not going to handle nearly as well. and like kfoote noted you don't get that 6-speed bulletproof tranny. the rims i could do without simply because i like my 18" rims on my WRX better than the way 17's look. i definately would have bought a STI, but i didn't want to pay $35k on a car at the time. i think you're still like the WRX though. i just beat a bad ass Jetta VR6 supercharged, that was featured in eurosport mag., and my WRX doesn't have all that much done to it. if you have the money to spend on the STI, i'd do it, but if you're really unsure if you want to spend that much for it then i'd buy a used WRX and supe it up. you'll enjoy driving either one. just my opinion.

Following that logic you should just get an RS instead of wasting all that money on a WRX :p Really doubtful you'll be able to give a WRX all the things an STi has without spending way more than the price of an STi.

Well, if all you care about is drag racing, you can raise the WRX up to STi levels and beyond with $7000. Then again, if you all you care about is drag racing, you should just buy a Mustang GT.

lol mustange gt's are the worst drag racing cars built aside for trying to use a honda civic ex and so on. Aside from that, HKS makes a good exhaust as well as Perrin and Greddy. The Boral exhaust sort of rumbles but its typical borla. The header however coupled with another exhaust sounds damn good. Cobb tuning makes a loud exhaust as well.

Am I missing something here? Can you explain to me how with $32k US (the price range we're talking here) with a little intelligence in the mods that are made to the car how you would have a Mustang GT ($24,300 MSRP new) that isn't faster in the 1/4 mile and doesn't have a lot more reliable power than the WRX or STi? Depreciation on the Mustangs (at least here in New England) is a lot more thn on the WRX's, and you can get a Mustang that's a couple of years old for a huge price savings.
For drag racing the mustang is much more reliable than either of the Subis as well, the drivetrain components can take more power more reliably than the Subis.

Because a mustang, for how much you have to spend on it in modifications, doesnt justify the results. A GT is the worst mustang platform to build off of besides a normal v6. A buddy of mine spent over 5k in mods to his mustang GT which was well spent money to go from 15.5 to 14.6 1/4. If you're talking Cobra thats another story. A cobra is a much better drag car. BTW, i have an 02 wrx and my trade in at dealership was $18,000 when i went in a week ago. I want to see a mustang have a trade in that high after 2 years.

Because of the engineering constraints put on it, a very strong case can be made that the solid rear axle in the Mustang GT is better than the IRS in the Cobra on all conditions except very smooth road courses.
Apparently your buddy wasn't quite intelligent enogh for the mods, or at least didn't modify it with the intent of optomizing 1/4 mile times. For $7k, you can get a 450 HP Ford crate motor that's a direct bolt in. This would be MUCH faster in the 1/4 mi than a modded WRX or STi and still be streetable.

Actually he did build it for 1/4 mile times and im sure he can build up motors better than anyone else here. Point is, Mustang GT just sucks for 1/4 mile. Any dumbass can buy an engine and have it put in their car to make it fast, thats just retarded. It doesnt help your case when you imply putting a new engine in a mustang to make it fast lmao.

Just to make a point, the WRX and WRX STi are Rally inspired vehicles I do believe...Rally racing doesn't simply rely on 1/4 mile times. I'd like to see a mustang that can take turns with as little sliding as my Legacy, or the STi for that matter. The 1/4 mile isn't everything.

You'd be amazed at how responsive the RS is too.

My legacy isn't as responsive as the imprezas I've been in, but it still seems to hold the road well. It might not be fast, but it's a damn nice car. That's what I was trying to say...1/4 mile isn't everything.

I posted this a couple days ago on a different forum:
The Impreza isn't an economy car they added some stuff on to get a performance model like MOST others in this catagory (SRT4, Type R, etc), it was actually designed from the beginning as a race car, then "detuned" into a mass produced car to homologate the chassis. Subaru originally rallied the Legacy, then decided they needed a more capable platform so they designed the Impreza for that purpose. It shows when driving the car or even when you get to just looking it over closely. There are so many places they could have saved a few bucks and made a more profitable car for them, but instead they chose to make a better product.

My best friend recently bought an 04 WRX. I went through EMT school with 2 impreza owners. One being a 03 WRX and the other being a 2.5RS in the style you once owned, Ray. Another friend has an impreza coupe in that same body style, accept with the 1.8 I believe. I've ridin in all of them multiple times.

I never said it was. I said it makes no sense to buy an STi purely for drag racing, when $32,000 will buy you a new Mustang GT and get it running high 12's, or a used Mustang GT running much lower.

yeah, but the STi can run fast and still function as a daily driver (specially for us who run twisty roads and are "spirited" drivers)

If your friend built up a Mustang GT for 1/4 mile times, spent 5k in mods, and can only run a 14.6, then either he is not a good driver or you overestimate his engine building capabilities.
If Ford can design, build, and produce a MUSTANG crate engine for $7k (and making money on it), then starting with a running engine and putting $5k worth of mods into it should be no problem getting 450 HP out of it even if you want to keep it an "all motor" car. Just by changing the internals (high compression lightweight pistons, light rods, longer stroke crank, machining the heads, valve job, match ported intake and exhaust headers, ECU programmer) should be under 5k and depending on what compression ratio you're running, (12.5:1 should still be safe) you should be in the 500HP range.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Mustangs, but they are a much better platform to start a drag car than a Subaru, even the STi, regardless of price.
As far as it being "retarted" to change engines and have a faster car, I guess we look at that differently. It's the difference between building a car for art or building a car for speed. I do not think modifying a car designed for drag racing faster is ever "retarted" regardless of where the extra speed comes from.

There's no need to get defensive about the STi not being as good a platform as the Mustang for drag racing; it wasn't designed to be. And since a Mustang GT runs low 14's out of the factory, I find it hard to believe that with $5,000 in mods, it runs a 14.6. I guess it depends on the mods, the driver, and the altitude.

Sorry, narrowminded misinformation irritates me. :comprage1
I do get annoyed by the "my car is the greatest ever and everything else sucks because it's not my car" posts. There is less here than in a lot of other message boards, but there is some. I have the STi because it what fits my purposes best for what I use the car for. Drag racing is not one of the things I consider when buying any car, as I have made a grand total of 2 passes in my life, and it doesn't really interest me from a driving perspective. From an engineering perspective, I find the upper levels of drag racing very interesting, as there is an astounding amount of technology involved to get a car to go 1/4 mi in 4.6 sec and 330 MPH. I totally agree with everything kman10587 has said so far in this thread, and if I wanted to buy a drag car, then the Mustang GT would have been a car I would have considered.
