air conditioning problem

who the a/c expert out there? i have a 94 intrepid bought used 4 years ago. the a/c didnt work when the weather got warm enough to check it out good. returned it dealership under extended warranty i purchased with car. they sais compressor leaked and replaced it for me. worked great all summer but next spring same problem,no a/c.back to dealership we go to find out that compressor also leaked. worked over 1 yr just long enough for warranty to expire on that compressor that was replaced the second time. i had freon level and system checked for free in one of those a/c inspection deals. supposedly no leaks and full charge but compressor doesnt kick in. two places say the evaporators are known to block or leak and that is what they think is wrong,even though neither can verify till after repair made? to the tune off $800 with no warranty on system.(because it is supposedly a common problem on this car) tired of using the four window a/c version after working outside all day in the humidity. could it possibly be an electrical problem such as a relay or something? can anyone give any ideas.

Our '95 has hit-and-miss AC. The compressor clutch appears to not me engaging. Check to see if yours is engaging when requesting AC. If not, it could be in the circuit. Some suggest bad contacts, while others have suggested a bad blower motor switch. These would all cost much less to have repaired.

or you could have a either a bad a/c compressor clutch relay or bad clucth coil. The actual compressor may not be bad but it sounds like more electrical then mechanical. All those other places are just trying to take you for a ride and don't know exactly what's wrong.

i have a 94 with the same problem gaslady. unfortunately, your mechanic is right, it is an evaporator problem, but it is also a condenser and possibly even compressor problem (since freon lubricates the compressor). To replace mine, ran about 900, so 800 sounds like a deal to me! :(

thanks for replies. i have come to the conclusion it it is the evaporator since i brought my gas detector home from work and it will pick up the freon inside coming thru the vents. least i know now its just deciding if it is worth fixing for the money.

Sounds like you have a bad A/C Pressure Transducer. I've replaced quite a few of these! Should cost around $125 to have it fixed.

A bad evaporator will not keep the A/C from running unless the refrigerant has leaked from the system. If it has a restriction in it, the A/C will run, but it will cycle off when the pressure goes too high.

Where would one find the A/C Pressure Transducer on a 1995 Intrepid? Is there a way to test it? and if it is bad is there a way to bypass it without purchasing a new one? I think this might be what is causing my radiator cooling fans to run nonstop. My A/C does not work and that is fine. Just want to stop the fans from running all the time.
