Keyless remote reprogramming

Picked up a '02 convertible 2 weeks ago and tried to re-program door lock & theft alarm as per owners manual, followed sequence but did'nt work. How can I hear chimes to know what mode I'm in if I have to open door to remove radio fuse with key inserted/on accessory? :confused:
