Can the antilock wheel speed sensors be removed and cleaned without removing the front calipers and rotors on a 1999 Silverado ?

Nope! Believe me I"ve tried...it's a pain in the arse. If you have an AC volt meter you can raise the truck, unplug the sensor, plug in the meter, spin the tire, and anything above 350mv is ok...anything under and it needs cleaned, replaced. The GM part number is PT374. If you need the whole hub with a new sensor it is GM 15112382...double check the hub number because it's for a 2000 but I think both are the same.

My pleasure....let me know how it turns out. The ABS system in our trucks is one of the worst designs GM ever dreamed up. The EBCM and pump unit is on the frame rail exposed to the elements. The four torx screws holding the EBCM on rust and strip out so you have to take the whole thing out and cut the bolts off. The pump wires turn green and either short out or open, the EBCM has a bad IC and a relay that can't handle the amperage of the pump running...it welds itself closed...that's why the pump runs with the engine off. The sensors sit on steel that rust and moves the sensor which alters the voltage to the EBCM. Then the brakes release at low speed. Or the sensor magnet picks up stray metal particles and the same thing happens. And to top it off the dealer charges a fortune to fix problems that are the result of GM's inability to design it right in the first place.
