The Sleeper, got sleepered!

Driving home from a friend's house tonight, I was making a left turn into this major street, and what do I see in front of me turning also? A gen-1 Eclipse, with a badge that said "EclipseGS" on the back right.
With the big, N-1 style exhaust behind it, I figured it to be "one of dem dur riysers"...http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/icon16.gif
Anyhow, he takes-off pretty fast from the turn, so I decided - "hey, why not (yes, there are probably a meeellion reasons to NOT do it - sue mehttp://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/uhoh.gif)?"
I take-off after him, and got next to him at about 50mph (told ya, he was driving fast), and he probably saw me shoot from the turn, so he knew my intent...I see his nose jump, so I hit it in third.
With my instant-on power (you'll see what I mean), I jumped ahead about a car and half which, by 80, was about 2 cars. This is where it gets interesting...
I look in the rear-view at 90, and not only did my lead NOT increase, it got cut-down to 1.5 cars! (I usually kill the "fixed-up" GS Eclipses around here by MANY cars). I guess he probably shifted to fourth at around this point, and I heard it: "psssshhhh!" (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/banghead.gif)
At about 100, he was ahead by about a fender, and I figured that he won, so I started to back-off. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/loser.gif
I did get one, small victory in this encounter. One of the reasons I backed-off also, was because I saw this Chevy truck aiming to pull into the avenue that me and the Eclipse were on (I always look ahead at least an 8th of a mile - remember this), and he was going into the lane the Eclipse was in (right-lane).
I knew that even at full-tilt, the Eclipse would be able to go around the truck (wide-lanes), but not if I'm anywhere near him. I also knew that foolio wasn't paying attention, because I glanced at him as he was next to me, and a more intent face, I have never seen - unless you count the time I took a shit in a bathroom with a mirror in front of the toilet...:sly:
Anyhow, sure enough, after I backed-off, the Eclipse stayed on it, and he was about 7 cars ahead (I guess he wasn't ABOUT to get beat by a stock Sentra, lol), when the truck entered his lane - sure enough, he had to swerve.
After that I followed him somewhat, just to see what his set-up was. I like to know these things, especially against a car that bested mine.
I was able to get next to his passenger-door up ahead after he slowed waaaay down (lol). Funny thing is, he had the passenger-window up (both windows were down when we started), and I tried to yell-over at him over the little crack he had in the window, and he never acknowledged. In fact, he turned-off into a gas-station. I would have followed, had he not done it so suddenly, and I hadn't had traffic that had pulled behind me. Oh well.
What do you guys think? Think he was shaken by his near-accident, and was embarrassed by that, or was he also embarrassed he barely beat my POS? http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/uhoh.gif
Anyhow, car was a fading-blue, with a large-exhaust, and the 1st-gen headlights (pop-up).

Nice job holding it down for us POS sentra's especially since he was boosted. I'm sure he was as shocked as your were. BTW There is no reason to make excuses for racing we all know that it just happens.

sounds like a good run to me.
ya know carrrnut those 1st gen eclipse's say gs on the back big enough so you can see it and then it says below it turbo intercooler, but you can't see it in a car you'd have to get out to see it, thats how small the lettering is. you probably already know this but just in case but just a fyi

Nice run. I wonder if it was a turbo eclipse to begin with, or whether it was a turbo kit added on to a n/a eclipse. Either way, I'm surprised you hung with him as well as you did.
Very entertaining story, as always, Carrrnuttt.

Carrrnuttt, it is time.
I heard Taco Bell is hiring, so you should have no trouble raising money for the kit. Perhaps then, no sleeper that you encounter will ever outsleeper you again.

The T doesn't need to be brought into this. Header, Exhaust, s4 jwt cams, intake, and Underdrive pulleys however do. It would have been a lot closer with those mods.

It was VERY close, without those mods. If I wanted to be a ricer, I could have flashed my hazards at about 90mph, and I would have still been ahead by a car. As a matter of fact, I really didn't want to go as fast as I did, but I wanted to see if he could actually pull past me, which he did, obviously.
If we went top-end, I'm sure he would have pulled more, but for a street-race, I was very happy with how my car held up. Also, if it was a 1/4 race, the fact that he took till about 100 to pass me by a fender, means that in my car's 1/4 range, there is a chance I could have beaten him on a track.
Anyhow, don't worry, as soon as funds allow, I have some very definite plans for my car...
