Cannot set timing to zero

Hi,
I'm new here and have a question. I just bought an 88 4Runner and it was recently rebuilt. It has a V-6 3VZE, with an automatic. The old owner told me that he put in hi performance cam from DOA and had the fuel injectors balanced and blueprined. He also stated the throttle body was opened up. When I start it there are two loud knocks and then they go away. The knock comes back at about 2500 RPM. I also cannot set the timing to zero degrees because the distributor will not rotate that far. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Best,
Alan

Have you checked the cam timing? Also sounds like the distributor may be indexed incorrectly. You may need to first set the cam timing and then install the distributor in the correct orientation.
Just guessing.

Definately sounds like the distributor is off a tooth. Set the the engine to top dead center, and remove the distributor, then reinstall it properly and recheck timing. I have also seen TPS problems that can cause this, but I suspect distributor timing.
