Estimate For 1993 Ford Explorer 5 Speed Transmission

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer Sport with 166,000+ miles and a 5 speed manual transmission. Since 100,000 miles the transmission has been making a whining sound in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. This whining sound started after a small transmission leak occurred and I think that due to a low fluid level, something in the transmission burned out. Now for the past few months the transmission is making banging sounds in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears, but not in 4th. The Explorer still has the original clutch.

I was told that the Explorer needs a new transmission and I received an estimate from my local mechanic for $1,800. This includes a completely rebuilt transmission, a new clutch and resurfacing the flywheel. Does this estimate seem reasonable and is there anything else that I should address while the transmission is being replaced?

I have a 94 with a 5-speed and I think they are the same trans. I had a leak and lost the fluid (they are notorious for that due to rubber plugs on top that dry out and lose the seal). I had mine done for $850 but that did not include the R&R ($200 by another shop) nor the clutch. So, if you shop around, you should be able to save some but make sure the shop knows this trans. Apparently it has a few tricks to it.

consider yourself lucky to get a rebuilt tranny new clutch and a resurfaced fly wheel for 1800. but i found a place to do mine for about 7 to 800. but thats just the tranny.

that seems like a pretty fair deal. for a brand new transmission though it costs 1300$ plus you gotta think your paying for labor too. on the other hand its 1300$ for a NEW transmission with all the seals included and completely built ready to put in. i just got one two days ago and am rebuilding my 91 explorer with it.
