I have a 1990 4-Runner that will not start after I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distibutor cap, and rotor. I had the coil checked and it seems to check out O.K. How do I verify if the coil ignitor is bad without towing it to a Dealer?? I also have the check engine light come on when I try and start the vehicle!! Need help, the darn thing is useless right now!!

What is it doing when it wont start? is it clicking or anything? If its not, likely the starter may be bad. Ifit is, check you alternator and battery to make sure both are in good working order.

As far as I know, the only test for an ignitor is to replace it once everything else in the ignition is replaced or checked out ok.

These were two great helps for us. Photos helped.

Our symptoms were: turn the key and NOTHING (no clicks or grr,grr or anthing). Yes, our two starter contacts were worn unevenly and because of this, a proper connection cannot be made so starter won't work properly. Replace the two contacts and clean it up and you have a new starter for the price of two contacts plus shipping.

Just a warning--to remove the starter in our 94 4Runner, unhook the battery, go in thru the right passenger wheel well and remove all the stuff in the way. You'll need several extensions on your ratchet to get at the starter bolts and then disconnect the two wires before you pull it out. This might take some time, so be forewarned!
