I have a 91 Volkswagon passat 2.0ltr Automatic Trany
I just bout this car and the transmission worked fine.
Although now the transmission wont shift gears in DRIVE i was told its in safty mode where DRIVE stays in 3rd and nothing else.
All the gears work fine if i shift it manuale from R to 1 to 2 to 3 but drive is just another 3 so something is defintly wrong. Im not to sure what happend to cause this but i did install a new sony CD player and I read somewhere that the blue wire with a white strip should be disconnected because that controls my automatic volume controle. So i made sure that was done but yet the trany stil wont shift in D. I Also flushed the trany out and had a new filter put in both in the pan and on top of the trany cooler. The filter that i put ontop of the cooler was just a regular oil filter that i found that was the same size as the original volks wagon one and same thread so i figure it would do the job, i dont think that would be the probelem.

Also i had A loose Ground to my battery that kinda made the hole car short out, which caused my fuel pump fuse to blow so i chaged that. I have a feeling that a fuse or a relay somwhere blew for my transmission but there is no fuse for my trany in the drivers side under the dash where all the fuses are located. IS there something anywhere else????? Also the economy/sport switch wont work eather????

PLEASE I COULD REALLY USE SOME HELP !!!!!!! I hope all this information will be able to tell you why my trany is in emergency gear????

THANKS BILL

That's a very difficult system to work on. The fuses you'd be interested in are #14 (10A), #20 (10A) and #51 (5A). I'm not sure where that #51 is located, perhaps either above the fuse panel in a seperate holder or under the hood.

OK, Let me tell you something about me. 1 and 1/2 year ago i bought a passat 91, it had exactly the same problem that your passat does. After looking for the reason of the problem finally i realased that in fact, this transmission failure is related with the electricall system because every time i turned on the antifog system (sorry for my english) of the rear glass it happened, and some times when the cooling fan turned on. Then i began to inspect the generator but it was working well. Finally i choose to replace the batery because when i bought the car it had not the right acumulator (i mean the battery wasn't the appropiate) then the failure dissapeared. Since then i have had the failure a couple times, but it is because the terminal connector is not fixed right.

May be your electricall system is overloaded or you need a bigger battery.

Well, i hope this tip help you.
