2004 Grand Am Driver's Seat Problem

This past saturday my fiancee and I bought a used, 2004 Grand Am SE1 and discovered one problem with the car. The driver's seat doesn't appear to lock tight on the track/guide rails. Whenever you try to slide in the seat (forward or backwards) or use the brakes (except using the brakes really softly), the seat will move foward too. The distance the seat travels is maybe half a centimeter, maybe more. THis may sound small, but it's annoying. I think every car i have ever driven has had the seat stay locked very fimly in place. I have tried adjusting the seat in case it had a bad setting, but nope, it still has this problem. Is this normal for this car or should I take it to the dealer to check out?

I'm sure that can't be normal, it would seem very obvious to me that such a quirk would not pass safety tests.
When you stop, and the seat moves forward the 1/2 a centimeter, does it move again when you accelerate? or the next time you brake? If it stays put after that 1/2 centimeter, maybe it was just getting placed between settings.
It doesnt sound like this is your problem, so I would have it looked at. good luck, and keep us informed

Thanks for the reply. When I hit the brakes, the seat moves forward and then when i stop or accelerate again, it moves backwards, so it is never latching in place. If i am doing light braking (like going into a curve), the seat stays put and is fine. My fiancee says that the seat is ok for her, but I too think it's a safety issue. I just don't see why a seat would do that.

It shouldn't do that. I'd take it in and see what they say.

DJ,
I know the problem you're describing. I just bought my son a 2002 Grand Am , and noticed the seat was moving, just slightly, back and forth when I braked and then accelerated. The seat is not locking in place. Try this. While parked, adjust the seat to the position you want and then push back very hard with your legs while leaning back into the seat. You should feel and hear the seat lock into place.
Hope this helps,
