ac makin funky noise

i have a 1989 sunbird turbo and i am having troubles with the air conditioner. when i turn the air on it revs up the motor for about five seconds, makes a sqeeling noise and then shuts off and then repeats this over and over. does anyone know what the problem is? i thought it might be the ac computer ocntroller thingy but i dunno. any help is apreciated
