2004 Tire Pressure

2004 4Runner SR-5 I recently swapped out my standard 16" rims w/ the 17" that come w/ the limited edition...the new rims came directly from another 4Runner so i know it has the tire inflation sensors. For some reason my tire pressure light is on and i don't know how to reset it. I double checked tire pressure just to be sure and it was good, but the light is still on. How do I reset it????

Ok here's the scoop. The tires that came with your Runner had 4 tire valves that were registered to the tire pressure warning system ECU in your vehicle. Your spare tire valve is also registered to your ECU. When you switch tires, wheels etc. you need to either swap the valves out of your old rims or take your Runner to the dealer and have them register the new valves to your ECU, which is very time consuming.
The tires need to be taken off the rims, and the ID numbers need to be written down from your new rims. You'd also need to remove the spare and get the number off of that valve as well. If you have a new spare, you'd have to do the same to that. You need to have the ID numbers from the tires that you are no longer using removed from your ECU and the new ID numbers need to be registered. It's a very complicated system.
If you take the Runner somewhere to have the valves switched from your old rims to your new rims (this will avoid having to register all the new numbers) make sure that they install them the exact same way that they were in the old rims. This is VERY important.

This sounds like an uproar waiting to happen. Wait until the tire shops start getting these in for tire swaps in 2 or 3 years.

Thanks for the info Erndog1369. It looks like it's gonna be such a hassle. they would have to remove 8 tires off of 8 rims to do a switch off, then reinstall the tires. and Brian R. i can totally see problems with this in the future as well. It just to much of a hassle and i think i'll just have to suck it up and live w/ that annoying tire pressure light being always on. Erndog 1369 do you mentioned taking it to the dealer, do you know if they would do it for free, the truck is only about 6 months old. The new rims came also came off a brand new limited that a friend of mine had. he wanted the 16" wheels because he goes offroading so we decided to trade off.

Free????? ummmmm, as a Toyota technician at a dealer, I would venture to guess no. I know that I wouldn't do it for free. Tires aren't fun to do at all. I didn't tell you this, but you could try and pass the tires you have on your Runner as the ones you got with it.... maybe you can sneak one by them. Like I said, not my idea!

I have the simliar problem where the dealer replaced my rims before I even bought the SUV....I checked all 4 tires and they were fine but the spare tire pressure was low, I've called the dealer service center and they said there is a pressure sensor on the spare tire also.....I don't know why, but once I filled up the spare tire pressure the low pressure light went away.....so give that a try if you haven't done it.
