Oil Recommendations

I just recently bought a 01 gixxer and it needs an oil change. Does anybody know which brands are good? thanks,any info is appreciated.

Amsoil is always a good buy. Only thing I'm unsure of is their filters... I've heard both good and bad things.

Get mobil one or something

don't buy synthetic until its due for its 2nd sevice
i use Motul and got a few more horsies down low and took away a generic flat spot

Everyone I know has run synth from day one with absolutely no problems. You can run synth anytime. I run mobil 1 15w50. Red cap. Best oil ive ran to date. And sorry but you dont gain A FEW horsepower from switching oil. You will notice things with oil but not in the powerband. I notice my shifts much more smoother with the mobil 1. All opinion.

You need to run mineral oil to bed the metal surfaces together while running in. If you don't want to look after your engine then disregard. And i'm sorry but you do gain horse power by changing oil. Think about it. If the engine is full of thick oil, it uses power to fight against the oil but with a thin oil it doesnt waste as much in power transfer to the sprocket.(Try running in water and it's harder than running on grass but running in mud is near impossible.) Also consider if you use too thin an oil the you may find during cornering that the oil moves away from the top end and may let it run too hot for a split second and that enough to damage bearings. this is one topic i know due to research and testing.

(atmospheric variables aside, e.g temp, air pressure etc)

Let me guess, you also believe that you shouldnt go over 65 for the first thousand miles on a brand new bike? Synth works so well with high compression motors its not even funny. From day run synth will do nothing but help. Helps seat the pistons properly without the restrictions on conventional oil. Everything runs smoother with synth especially with a lot of the clunky trannys that are on bikes nowadays. Everyone has their opinion and im sorry but oil may help things run better or in different ways but you dont gain 3 friggin HP from changing oil. Do you know how much 3 HP is on a bike? Aparently not because you can barely acheive that with an aftermarket air filter.

Ok.

Stick with the Suzuki filter. It is a top notch piece. It is worth the price. If you plan on keeping your bike, DO NOT use a Fram! They are junk.

As far as oil, just dont use anything with an EC (energy conserving) rating. It contains teflon and other friction modifiers that will prevent the clutch from locking up. You will end up rebuilding the clutch.

As far as syn vs dyno oil, IMO there is no definitive answer. Run what you think is the best and be happy with your decision. It is more importantto remember to change the oil and filter at the proper intervals.

As far as my oil choices.... I have tried Valvoline Max. (the oil for high mileage motors) Initialy, it does a decent job at keeping the motor happy. But after 1500 to 2000 miles the top end of the motor gets noisy. At this point, I think the oil is shot. When I changed it it had the viscosity of water. Then I tried plain Castrol 10-w40. It lasted about 3000 miles before it broke down and the motor became noisy. Also, I have used Motul synthetic. At 3000 miles the motor still quiet and the oil came out in about the same condition it went in. The viscosity didnt seem to detoriate as bad as the other oils.

If you are going to ride hard, and you typically dont change your oil as often as you should, Motul seems to be the best of the oils I have used. If you dont ride too hard or often, and you are a maintence freak the Castrol is a good choice. As far as the Valvoline, don't bother. It doesnt last too long in cars either.
