Howdy,

Just bought an '01 alero, not sure how to replace the rear 6x9's ????
Do i have to take apart the rear deck from underneath or just pry the grills off with a screw driver ?

Also, how do I get at the 4x6's in the doors ?

Details would be appreciated as I dont want to butcher my car up.

Thanx

-put both rear seats down
-start by removing the remaining supports by removing the bolts (one on each side), you have to pry up the bottom of them to see them, once the bolts are out pull towards you and twist the left one counter-clockwise to remove it and clockwise for the other one.
-once you've done this, you have to remove the plastic at the top of the opening into the trunk by removing the plastic clips, careful not to break them, should be 4 of them
- after that, you can remove the two pillars along the rear windshield, they're just held on by clips so be careful when you're prying the off
- when all this is done, you should be able to pry off the rear deck with minimal difficulty, just pry up and pull towards you if i remember correctly.
- the rear speakers are held in by a bracket with clips so they aren't too hard to remove

To get to the front speakers you need to remove the door panels. On the 2 door models there are 2 screws behind the clip under the door handle and 1 screw behind the reflector. Just take a flat head screwdriver and pry both off and the screws behind them are philips head screws. Next gently pry on the bottom of the door panel to start releasing the clips holding the door panel on. Undo any wiring harnesses behind the door panel and the speakers are now accessable.

What about the tweeters in the front doors? Those are the only ones that are blown, and I actually just want to get to them to disconnect them for now. It looks like I'll have to take the door panels off to get at them... right?

nope just pop the little cover that houses them right off. You actually have to remove the tweeter covers to take the door panels off
(guess I left that part out)

I'm not sure about Alero's but all other cars that I have worked on have a clip between the knob and the door panel. You have to get a flat head screw driver behind it and pop it off.

Hey,

I bought some Alpine 6x9's to replace my factory speakers in my 2001 Alero. I have premium sound, so is that what is preventing these speakers from not working? Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ben

The premium sound speakers are bi amped meaning that they have two sets of wires going to it. One set has a highpass frequency for the tweeter and the other set controls the woofer. You have to get biampable speakers to work properly with the factory amp. There's another way around it that involes finding the speaker wire before they go into the amp and connect the speakers from there but I'm not sure about this method.

Hello, whitecap, i was wondering if you could answer a couple questions for me. I have a 99 alero. My speaker in the drivers side of the door has a rattle in it. I popped part of the cover off to try and see what the rattling was coming from. Do you know if i cut the mesh over the speaker, will it effect the speaker? Will I be able to fix the speaker this way? Also, I have a chronic problem with my fan. I had it fixed twice, and now once again, the fan is only blowing on high power. Do you know wat the problem could be? Please respond. Thanks -alero dude

I can help out with your fan...

There is a resistor board which controls the current going into your fan which adjusts the fan speed. You can pick up a new resistor board for about $25 from an Autozone/Napa/etc. type store. It is located behind the glove box under the dash. It slides in vertically towards the firewall. You will need a flashlight, short handled wrench, and flexibility to get to it.
