The car is stuck in 4th gear and the shifter is able to move up and down freely not side to side. Is it solely the shift rod? or could it be something else ???? need advice on what to do and exactly what parts to get

if it just came off, put the rear end up, put the cable back on, put a new cotter pin in... and poof! you're done
if the cable broke, it's a bit more involved. you have to take the center plastic stuff off and the shift boot (assembly) off and do a whole new cable.

I think both shifter cables are a bit over $200 from the dealer.
It is fairly common to brake them over time.

Cotter pins at the shifter and at the tranny.
Pop them off, undo the cable where it comes through the firewall.
If memory serves, one cable is easier to get from the top of the engine and the other is easier from the bottom.
