My 2.3 Quad 4 is giving me a few troubles. Last summer I changed out the crankshaft and all bearings. I started using synthetic oil also. In the last couple months, I've been driven nuts by this knocking sound. Sounds like a lifter knock but after pulling the cams, I couldn't find anything wrong with any of them or the cams themselves. The knocking starts after the car has been running a few minutes and seems to dissipate when the engine is under load (i.e., when I’m climbing a hill) but as soon as the car is on level ground or going down hill, it comes back. It’s making me insane.
My other problem is with the fuel system. For a couple of minutes after I start the car and drive down the road, the car will sputter and surge a few times and sometimes even stall. After that it seems to run fine. It seems to happen every time I start the car, even it is warmed up. I'm thinking that it may be the ECM but wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions before I shell out the $75 to replace it and it not be the problem. When I pull the codes from the ECM, it says that there's nothing wrong. Plugs are new BOSCH Platinum 2's, the coils and ignition module are less than a year old. I could run the ignition module over to AutoZone and test it out but I don't really think that is the problem.
Appriciate any assistance anyone can give.

Well i had the same problem with my Q4 fuel system.Id go out and start it and it almost sounds like its going to stall then when id give it som gas it would surge and seems to do it more on cold mornings. Are u using reg. gas?I was and then i started putting fuel injector cleaner in it EVERYTIME i filled up and switched to super, after a couple weeks of the fuel injector cleaner the problem was gone and now i just put super gas in it and maybe every few months some fuel injector cleaner just to be safe.I think its the fuel injectors made for these cars (if u cant already tell by my reply) they just arnt that good in my opinion.Try switching to a cleaner burning gas maybe that will solve it.
