popping while braking (98 Passat)

98 Passat has a popping noise when you brake quickly, and then when you start of it pops again. This only happens when you break firmly from 30mph and up. Any ideas?......do I need front breaks or what?? Help!!! I am going on a 1300 mile trip next week.

I think we might have the same problem... slower speeds while braking, accelerating, turning there a loud knock in the fromt wheel area. Please post if you find something out. The dealer after 3 trips is telling me it's "normal driving noise"... somehow I don't think so.

the fault I mentioned in a previous post was also heard when I first pressed the brake pedal lightly and went away as I pressed it harder

If it is the same as the fault I had do not wait for it to get worse, it was in my case very serious

same problem here 99 passat just got it. what the hell is it brakes? cv shaft?

Are you sure it's not suspension? VW had second worst suspension before Mitsubishi. I think all the parts are "poured" and not machined, so no matter how good you are, it's far more that perfect method, however cheap, that's why you can buy low-end loxury car for such a cheap price. Anyhow, front end of VW always make noise.

I never found out what it was, but had front end brake work done. Feb. 04 and the noise went away. I then asked my new "non dealer" foreign car specialist and it was something to do with my brakes. I do not recall exactly, but I think it waws the warning bar moving causing a click when lightly applied.

same thing for me it was the brakes cheep shit.
