'94 Jetta temp light

I have a 1994 Jetta III, 4 cyl, manual trans. - it recently(about 4 weeks ago) had problems with the check engine light going on, but I had a sensor changed and that seems to have stopped that problem.

Now, twice this week I have started my car in the morning and as I am backing out of the driveway the red temperature/thermometer light starts FLASHING. I know that flashing is bad, so I turned off the car and checked under the hood. No apparent hoses broken or anything. So I closed the hood, started the car and the light was off. So I drove to work without incident. Both times the temp gauge was normal.

About 6 months ago I replaced the thermostat because the temp light was on (but not flashing). A month after that I had a hose break, so the light was FLASHING, but I pulled over right away and was able to get it fixed.

Is this a glitch with the light, or do I really have a problem? I live in the middle of nowhere where no one will look at a foreign car, so your help is appreciated. I just need this car to last me about three more months, until I can move back to civilization.

thank you!

I had the same problem on my 95. The red light was flashing.. but not always. It seemed to go off whenever it wanted to, so I thought it might just be wiring or something. It wasn't- It was just low on antifreeze (mine had a leak).

Is your coolant reservoir filled to the line?

I have a Jetta 95 and the first time that happened to me one of the hoses was liking, after repair it stopped flashing, second time there was no liking but the water level was too low, it stoped after refill. So from my experience I can say is just that. (excuse my spelling, mexican on the go!)
