Accord Rumor.

Just read somewhere on the net, can't recall where though. Honda is finally giving us accord members something to get respect out there. It appears that the next gen Accord will kick out 240hp. And the V6 will come in a stick, FINALLY!!! I hope it's true and that we finally see this thing!!

This is what I found:

Nissan North America Inc. and American Honda Motor Co. may soon find themselves head-to-head in a horsepower war. Tom Elliott, American Honda’s executive vice president of auto operations, hinted that the next Honda Accord will top 240 hp -- the amount of horsepower behind the 2002 Altima with a V-6. The next Accord is coming in fall.

He spoke in a panel discussion at the Automotive News Brand Marketing Seminar here last week. "Two hundred forty is not enough," Elliott said to panel member Jed Connelly, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Nissan North America. "We’ve been holding back."

Nissan raised the bar recently with the 2002 Altima, which arrives in September. The four-cylinder model will generate 180 hp, compared with 155 in the current Altima.

The four-cylinder 2001 Accord generates 150 hp; the V-6 version generates 200. "We’ve got to remember that, while we’re in the transportation business, we’re also in the entertainment business," Elliott said.

Because gasoline prices are rising, perhaps the times are not ideal for a horsepower war. Asked about a potential spike in fuel prices, Jim Press, COO of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., said car shoppers would not see gasoline prices reaching $3 per gallon as a "a valid reason" to buy more fuel-efficient models.

He said, "Consumers don’t think its permanent."

I hope it does come true. I don't care about the price of gas at that point.

Man, I hope this is correct.. but I have my reasonable skepticisms about this info. Remember Honda's "veil of secrecy" practices. It would seem like a great move for Honda, but somehow this doesn't add up in my book. Guess we'll keep our eyes peeled, our ears open, and our fingers crossed.

Well JD, it would behoove Honda to do so. You see, Nissan is coming out with the new Altima this fall. Rumors or facts say that it will be pushing 240hp. I don't think Honda wants to fall that far behind the competition. Plus the fact that since the prelude is history, at least the Accord coupe in my opinion could pick up some of the flack. Stick, V6 + One out of control S.O.B. = DVSNCYNIKL.:D

That's awesome. That's such a good move by Honda. There are so many people who have been waiting for this.

You know what would be really funny . . . if Honda steps up to the plate trying to challenge Nissan with some astronomical horsepower stats . . . and end up throwing Honda reliability out the window . . .

Nobody can extract power from an engine like Nissan . . . but I would love to see somebody try . . .

Don't get too cocky i_rebel. The Hondas in the states are the one's that don't impress. However, the ones overseas my friend would make you retract that statement quickly. Still love the skyline though.

I suppose you may be right . . . I really wouldn't know. I've just had a thing for Nissan for as long as I can remember.

Potent performance packages please plenty of people plus pad pockets . . . proudly Nissan produces powerful perfection . . .

where do i come up with this stuff . . . ?

Nissan of past has been impressive, Nissan of past couple years has been a downer, Nissan of future could give Honda a run for their money in fun to drive category.

I have to say that NO one in the US makes engines as good as Honda.

The NSX Vs. Skyline has been a classic battle in the GT circuit. One we hope to see in 2003 IF Nissan brings the Skyline "as is" to the US. For now I'll just have to battle it out on GT3:D

Most importantly however, Honda Accord 240+, Nissan Altima 240+, COME ON TOYOTA! I would love to see all the auto makers compete with 240+ V6 engines, 6 speed stick, sport suspension, etc. Forget the "Zoom zoom" commercials, REALLY bring it on.:finger:

Amen Brother!!!

Bring it!! Bring it!! BRING IT ON!!! I have a 200-hp 2001 Accord V6 Coupe, and yes, it's gone in an instant when the 2003 6-spd manual 240-hp Accord comes on the market. Now... that coming out, along with the 260-hp Maxima, along with the 276-hp (or 230-hp detuned) Lancer Evo VII, and Skyline V35 coming out... is going to make for some interesting car buying for me at the end of 2002 ;)

Don't put your hopes up too high. Honda are not known to be preformance setter on this market. They are known to do every well but not excel in one particular part. The new Camry did not receive it's much anticipateted 220hp engine. I see the next Accord getting no more than the 225 hp 3.2L CL/TL engine.

R35
08-23-2001, 11:13 PM
OK 225HP with a 6 sp, still sounds like more fun than 200hp automatic eh? I agree that chances are we will not see a huge jump in HP from Honda, but if they want to keep there #1 spot, they will need to "Bring IT!". Know what I mean:D

I think most likely 5 speed. Depending on a couple factors. If new Prelude doesn't come out then chances are 6 speed will make it into production. Acura will most likely offered 5 speed to base model TL/CL for next generation to silence the critics. 6 speed will be only available if you purchase Type S.

"IF"? You do know they dropped the Prelude don't you?

Conservatively speaking a 5 speed would fit, but again if Honda wants to stay #1 it need's to at least keep up with the competition. The biggest threat for them come's from Toyota with their deep R&D pocket's.

Yes I know Dick Colliover drop the prelude. But for it's model life timeline. The new model is due out in 2003.

Hmm last I heard the last Prelude would come out next year?

From Car and Driver:
"The Daily Auto Insider
Honda Chooses Economy Over Performance
June 27, 2001

Honda will introduce a high-mileage, hybrid gasoline-electric Civic next year and drop the Prelude, a relatively high-performance, sporty coupe, USA Today reported.

The new Civic sedan should be on the market by March, the story said, adding that Honda hopes to triple its sales of fuel-efficient, hybrid vehicles. Production of the Prelude, meanwhile, will be discontinued after next year.
However, Honda said the 'lude will be replaced in 2003 by another coupe of "completely different design."

Honda's U.S. sales chief, executive vice president Dick Colliver, told the paper that the coupe market "is very competitive. [Prelude is] built in Japan, and we haven't been able to get the cost down."
USA Today said the Prelude was outsold last month by the $21,000 Honda Insight, a two-seat gas-electric hybrid.

Colliver added that he hopes to sell at least 12,000 hybrid Civics a year, in addition to 5,000 hybrid Insights.
"Civic comes right out of the chute with a bigger engine, automatic transmission," he said, referring to the low power and manual transmission that hampered early sales of the Insight, which gets 57 miles per gallon in town.

Colliver also said Honda will also beginning selling its own version of the Acura MDX sport utility vehicle soon."

Now there is word in this same article about "another coupe in 2003", but not the prelude. If you've heard or seen otherwise cool, please do tell:D

Like I said before I would love to see a more competetive Prelude.

Thats the nature about Honda. They always keep people guessing including their competitor. Prelude's model life goes till 2003. Weither a new one comes out to replaced it is unknown at the current moment. There was a report Prelude droping current platform and going onto Accord platform. All these are just rumors of what might happen. Prelude has always been Honda's flagship sports car. Up until S2000 came out. It is one of the most well known Honda of all time.

I must say that I'm not too pleased with the way they messed up the new Accords. I definitely don't like the looks of it. From the side view, it kinda looks like a Civic(No pun intended).

Ahh, can't have everything. Just bring it in stick.

there were '03 6spd's but they came in late in the year (~250 for canada) the '04's are trickling in now 1/dealership at a time.
