Shift kits increase the line pressure on shifts resulting in faster/crisper shifts.

a smooth shift, as the car comes from the factory, offers the smooth non-performance like ride you are used to, but slides the clutches (in turn wearing more) for a less noticeable change in effective gearing. A firm shift (is supposed to wear the clutches less, as less time is spent slipping and more time spent gripping) and can be reminescent of the old school chirp into second gear of most 60's-70's cars, or can be compared to a hard slam power shift of a manual trans. The only problem that can be encountered with a performance shift is that instead of wearing the clutches inside the trans, you now have extra force being applied to other areas of your drivetrain, such as your CV joints (ie axle shafts connected via universal joints between the trans and the wheels). A shift kit will aid in increased performance, faster acceleration because less time is spent making the shift comfortable and more time accelerating.

Plus the shift kit will make your tranny run cooler, cooler is better because normal tranny oil after 240 degf will not either protect nor help your tranny at all. You can use it in conjunction with tranny oil additives that increase the oil friction to spend less time between gears shifts and more time delivering torque to the wheels.

all i know is after i got the tranny rebuilt in my 95 GTP i can squeek the tires at 30, suprised the hell out of me when i was cruising and a damn honda pulled up along me, mashed it and got some squeek at 30 i was pretty impressed and thats with a 3.4 DOHC i imagine a s/c 3.8 would be better. i got a B& M shift kit put in after i blew up my tranny in february and i also have the biggest hayden tranny cooler i could find.
