If you were flat-@ss broke (like me) and you were buying a CD receiver, which of the 2 below would you choose???
Blaupunkt Casablanca CD50 (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-eDOinuVJvUH/ProdView.asp?s=0&g=300&id=morephotos&pi=1&i=023CASABLA&display=L) I don't know much about Blaupunkt, so I'm just going on what they tell me...
or
Aiwa CDC-MP3 (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-eDOinuVJvUH/ProdView.asp?s=0&g=300&id=morephotos&pi=1&i=570CDCMP3&display=L) I know Aiwa isn't the greatest, but remember, "you're broke..."
Additionally, you can vote, other, in which case, what would you buy for $200 US as a CD receiver?

My biggest issue besides putting out some decent power, is that I have to have a volume knob as opposed to pushing buttons on the unit itself. Remotes don't matter, but the receiver itself MUST have a volume KNOB :D
As for the Rock-fos... I absolutely can't spend any more than $200 US because I need something for my CDs that isn't my Discman w/a tape adapter  but at the same time, I am so superly broke right now :(

I just checked out Crutchfield.com and did you mean the KDC 416s??? Maybe the KDC 519??? Not that it matters much anyway b/c both have volume buttons instead of the rotating knob.... :(

Oh, the 516 is last years model. the 519 is prolly this years model. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the button volume control either, but I got used to it. So you want a volume knob huh? how bout the Pioneer DEH 2400. Actually, the only brands I WOULDN'T buy would be Jenson, and Sony.
A friend of mine has the Aiwa you're looking at. The thing feels really cheap and and has a tacky blue color at night.

Go on eBay and get a slightly used Pioneer DEH-7200 or above. You should be able to find a DEH-7200 for right around 200. Rotary push knob, flip down face, OEL display (important for nice display), more features than you know what to do with, remote and you can hook up a DVD/VCR player for 35.00 (CDRB-10 changes cd changer bus port into RCA audio pre-outs). Very cool. I forgot the four interchangable displays (7200 has two EQ displays, swimming dolphins and aerial rotation around Aztec temple)

Eclipse 54400. $229.99 retail. 3-year warranty if dealer installed, 1st year over the counter exchange, 1st year theft replacement if someone steals it out of your ride, plus the best sounding cd player in the industry. (Industry Poll) No other vendor can say that.

That's what I was afraid of... :( Bugger.
As for nis.k.a.'s e-Bay suggestion, I am hesitant to use "second-hand" units because I've seen my friends beat up their receivers pretty nicely, and I'm not looking to "inherit" something like that... :uhoh:

i agree with maxima dave about the eclipse, however look on ebay see if you can find an eclipse and try to get the warranty transfered over as far as the 1 year theft protection goes, so that the unit is totally legit when you get it, itll be better than anything else you could find, no matter what price, check out nakamichi too, cd35z you could probably find it at a good deal.. as far as good equipment goes thats what id try
i have aneclipse cd8061, and i love it, ill post pictures soon

It sounds weird, but have you ever tried the pawn shops. I go there all the time cause my friend works at one. They have some really nice stuff in there. Some of the stuff is ghetto, but a lot of their electronic stuff new to newer. Plus you can look at it first hand. Its a good way to get a top of the line (maybe a year ago) deck for a reasonable price. Just a suggestion though.

If you were flat-@ss broke (like me) and you were buying a CD receiver
out of those two...blaupunkt for sure...especially if you ever listen to the radio...blaupunkt is known for very good FM reception..
GO ALPINE IF YOU CAN.
but if you are not wanting to spend more than $200, can't find an Alpine you like, and you are lookin on crutchfield....there are some really nice Clarion decks...they make quality stuff..and they have decks that have the twisty volume knob you're wantin...there is also a nice Sony deckCDX-CA700X..which would sound real nice...they are known for not so good radio(not as good as that blaupunkt anyway)...nice CD sound...almost no skipping in their newer decks....and buttons that fall off occasionally..:)
personally I would stay away from AIWA junk...

I wasn't exactly giddy over the idea of an AIWA CD receiver, but anymore you can never tell when someone makes a decent unit outside of their typically crappy lines.
Thanks a ton for all of these responses. I'm trying to check them all out as fast as I can. Sadly, school has very much limited my internet usage, so I'm not as available to all your feedback as I had been before. Thanks again!

I knew boys were good for something!!! (besides holding drinks ;) )
This guy I just started dating is considering GIVING me his Kenwood head unit. I do believe that it's the KDC 516s that Swonder was talking about earlier. I'm stoked.
If I do get my hands on it, how hard is it to put it in the stock unit's place????

So easy. the brackets from the stock unit screw onto the new head unit and just screws right into the slot. and the wiring is the same as any head unit. the wires should basically be completely color coded. Now, some of the sound junkies in the forum are gonna tell you to get rid of the stock amps and get new ones, or just drop the stock amps all together, but to tell you the truth, it doesn't sound that bad with the stock amps.

I just don't like anything in the xplod line. I've read many times how the speakers just blow for no reason. (I used to have em, they don't sound great either.) And, I think the xplod decks just look tacky.

The installation sucked... still isn't in.
I forgot to get an antenna prong adapter, so that did me in from the start... And I'm too cheap to buy a wire harness, so I'm gonna "Afroengineer" everything without the harness!
Wish me luck! :flash:

I gave in. I paid the $17 for the harness and the $11 for the antenna adapter. The install was flawless from there! :D
Oh, and since I bought this as an open unit at Best Buy, I was a bit iffy on the item... Turns out a friend of mine knows the kid whose unit it was. The only shady part is that the volume knob on the unit itself is picky and doesn't always work. (This is where my nifty "credit card style" remote comes in handy! ;) ) I may still go into Best Buy and bitch about it since I went all out on the 4 year warranty! :D

I've tried Pioneer, Rockford, and Clarion....and had experience with Panasonic, Blaupunkt, Aiwa, Kenwood, and some others.
Pioneer is great value for money....but I find the Clarions to be the best bet. They aren't even that much more expensive. The have the best user interface I've seen, and the line out is generally a quality 4V. Even the displays are attractive, and multi-coloured.
The only little problem is that they tend to lose power at high crank after about 40 mins, (like most others), but if you're using an amp, it becomes no problem.
Check out the DRX9675z.....or something like that.
Plus, Clarion's got the cool MP3 and CD player, along with AM/FM, with changer capabilities etc etc etc.
Remember, "Car Audio and Beyond."
