welcome to AF. what style of car do you like?

many cars can be made fast, but how fast is the question. people are very knowledgeable and helpful here. i hope you enjoy your stay.

IMO 240sx's are very nice.

well u probably know about the rx-7 , supra, 300zx, and the vr4.....they will be good cars to get.....the 300zx will be the cheapest and they take mods really well, they can handle up to 600 hp with stock internals. You can get a nice tt for like 10-12k

u can get a nice rx-7 for like 15-20k

u can get a nice supra for 25+k

Basically it depend what your needs are!

I agree with weedeater, 300zx's are nice, and especially the vr4's.

Also, kittedb18 has a great idea with the 240sx's, those can not only be very fast, but can look amazing.

I know you posted earlier that you were looking for an import, but I guess if you're not too picky and you are really looking for cheap speed, maybe you should look into a mid-90's cobra. I know kittedb18 just got one, and his is a '99, for nothing TOO expensive.

All in all, there are so many roads you can go down, it's hard to say with the amount of money you're looking to spend. Welcome to AF, Good luck to you and keep us updated.

good 3rd gen RX-7s will run you 10k
Good turbo Supra... 14... 15k.

If you want to go as fast as possible with that much money... best bets probably a dsm. 1g Talon TSi (awd) or Eclipse GSX, get a Shepherd built tranny, get better internals and start boostin.

The SRT4 costs about 21K new.

*edit* ..you said import - sorry.

I'd go the 300ZX or the VR-4 route if it were me.

i agree with 97tsi.. you can get a '96 cobra for around 9 grand, the motor is good to around 800hp, and you can get the trans rebuilt for $3000 to take that much if you really need it. But if you want an import, fair enough.. I'd go with an RX-7. Thats just me. Rotary, rear wheel drive, and looks better than any of the others mentioned. Just don't put a big kit and huge muffler and shit on it, IMO they look the best stock(newer generation that is) or with a very mild body kit.

the only problem with a rx-7 is their engines being and amazing feat and all arnt that realiable....ive seen a lot that have had to have their engeines replaced at 40k miles..im sure there are some with over 100k but most of them dont last that long.

A supra and a 300zx on the otherhand...they have one of the most reliable engines in the 90's....they can easily reach 100k miles

vr4's have ok engine reliablity...their tranny's arnt strong to with stand a lot of hp...but then again i havent ever seen a vr4 with 800 whp

so basically your best beat is the 300zx....it seems to be the all around best in your "situation"

Hell I could wait bit and get more cash. A supra is really intresting. Iam probably gonna go with a supra. If I need more cash I will wait but I think for 20 I can get the supra then save cash for mods/etc

You better have a really good mechanic if anything goes wrong on a 300zx... it'll cost an arm and a leg if you don't know how to fix them. I believe it takes about 6 hours to change the spark plugs on a 300zx, and if my memory serves me right it's cause the plugs are under the intake plenum.

Along with the VR4 I would as assume... tight engine bays with large TT V6 setups are not fun.

Yeah, I have heard that the rotaries weren't famed for their longevity... Then again, I don't know about you guys, but I rebuild my motor every few years anyways, I don't get to 40k. Once you start pushing enough power, longevity is a thing of the past... Plus after a few years you always want more, which would usually warrant a reubild anyways!

I wish I had the money to rebuild my motor, period...sigh

Well I dont want a car that is 2 complex and hard to get replacement parts. So that should lead me to domestic cars. Or common imports.

there are people with 700hp vr4's on the stock trannie, its very strong its just there synchro's get worn over time pretty quick.

imo you have such a huge range but since you limit yourself to import then, like everyone else has been saying, 300zxtt, vr4, supra, rx-7 or even a 2nd gen eclipse gsx, and mod that

oh and a mr-2 :iceslolan or a m3

m3's are nice, real nice!!!! but damn talk about costing a lot to mod!!!!

Rotaries are reliable enough.

If you keep an eye on your engine. Considering it actually burns oil to run, you just have to have upkeep on it.

Rotaries wont shit out on you if you rag it out... *thinks back to memories of 110mph in 3rd gear*

I'd have to say that the best bang for your buck in buying cost and modding cost would sadly enough be a 1989 5.0. They are very cheap and easy to mod compared to just about any import and are reliable. A nice 5.0 will run about 5k, and parts to put it around 400 hp to the crank will run another 2000, give or take. Just my opinion though.

Just get a c4 corvette from anywhere from 6 to 13k and mod it with lingenfelter parts. It works for me.
