does cutting off the catalytic converter do anything other than make your car not emissions legal and louder? because when mine went bad i just had it cut off, Michigan doesnt have emissions testing

It does open up the exhaust. So some power.

Gutting the cat is gay and makes a dumb hollow sound and often leaves chunks inside the pipe. Just replace it with a straight pipe or buy a nice highflow cat.

you're gay. naw im joking. actually it works pretty much like a resonator so my car sounds like v-8 (so everyone tells me), and if you correctly guy your cat you wont get the chunks...

lol, i personally think you should run with a high flow aftermarket cat, just cuz taking it all the way off dosnt give you much more power, and can actually loose you low end torque, and your emissions are higher which is bad for the planet. so eh. i say run em

emissions testing is sanctioned by the local governments, its different from county to county...

It really depends on how you gut your cat, and how old and type of car. Even on my 89 truck with only one O2 sensor thats on the exhaust manifold screwed it up. The cat runs at like 1500 or 2500 degrees dont remember, but if you take it out your O2 sensors read a lower temp and make the car run richer than hell. Or something like that, I don't remember exactly the whole deal on it, but your mileage and low end will hurt for sure, at least I noticed it on my truck. Sounds better with the straight pipe, but after all the work and literally less than 4mpg I would just put in a hi flow one if I had the money.

Yea gutting them is illegal but since u dont have emmisions u dont have to worry about. I gutted mine and i love the way it sounds. Gutted cats and 80 series flowmaster sound like sweet music to my ears. Yea its only 47 bucks but it also only takes an hour to hollow them out. U decide which u like. I don't know how u would leave anything in there any way. U have the cats off the car its not hard to make sure u took everything out.
LT1 Kayker- U should get 02 simulators and ur problem should be taken care of. U just plug them into the car and it makes the computer think that everything is normal.

has any one else noticed a loss in gas mileage? i was about to go gut mine and thought i'd do a quick search on it and this is the first time i'd heard about getting worse gas mileage. i already get bad mileage and i thought that this would help if anything.

damn i was gonna loose mines since here in florida you can do whatever you want at least thats how it seems, but if it make your gas milage suck (which i didnt have a clue of) then damn that. thought the louder sound would be cool but i dont think its worth it if thats the case.

if you dont have the o2 simulator you would get worse gas milage due to it running richer... but otherwise i would figure you would get more hp and the same gas milage...

on a 3.4L moter without the cat your going to be missing needed back pressure, a few shops around here will do it, but your going to be best off to spend the extra $$$ and just geta cat put on at exhaust special t's

thanks. ill look into that.
dmbrisket, there is a good posibility i'll lose mpg if i just gut the cat and nothing else.

you very well could because there isnt that back pressure that was there when the cat was whole, also you could harm your engine, back pressure is bad, we all know that, but a certin amount of it is needed in order to maintain a stable running condition on your moter, also i wouldnt reccomend bypassing the oxy system, its there for a reason, and even though engeneers do some fucked up stuff to vehicals at times, i would say bypassing something like that could be bad if a problem ever did arise

and on topic.. i cut the cat off my car and felt no change.. the car ran better because my cat wasnt clogged obviously because it wasnt there, but i saved the money it would have cost buying the cat.

check your gas mileage, your most likely getting shit anymoe, you need the backpressure from the cat, or a smaller then usual test pipe, the v 8;s can handle it, 3.4's cant, not open ended

sry about bringin this back kaotic. i just read it and didnt even look to see how old it was. :banghead: what was i thinking... lol.
but you guys think that it wouldnt hurt my 89 305, because i have just the one o2 sensor on my manifold right...?

haha. i can understand that. the only one ive liked was my bros 86 iroc with tons of mods. but my car was cheap and right now i dont wanna put a lot of money into it. and gutting a cat would be free, or running a straight pipe would be cheap. by "it should be able to keep up" did u mean that mpg wouldnt get worse.

no, i ment the moter shouldnt be harmed by not having enough back pressure like the 3.4's and other six's would, your mileage might go down 1 to 2 miles but nothing drastic, i think
