Banging and knocking

I was driving in today and all of sudden my 84 381i started making a weird sound when I went over bumps. Like something was loose and banging around - it was coming from the rear, passenger side. I pulled over and everything looked all right - the tire, the trunk...etc.

Anyone have any clue what could be banging around back there? Could the spare tire of come loose?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, could be your shock mount . . . mine broke free and my mechanic fabed a piece using a exhaust flange . . . looks awesome ! !

Check that and also, your shock could be blown, mine was and it was loud banging as well.

I think the shock mount suggestion might be correct - or it could be blown.

Is it still safe to drive tonight?

And how mcuh is it going to run me to have it fixed? Or is it something I can do myself (keep in mind I have minimal auto knowledge).
