My 97 Pontiac grand am died over the weekend. I also wasted the battery in an attempt to start the car. Now it wont change from park to neutral. I need to move my dead car but the thing wont budge from park.
Is there something I can do to take it out of park with out buying a new battery?

put a charger on the battery for just a little bit, then see if you can push the key forward and get it into neutral (you should be able to do this without the battery charged anyways though)

I tried charging the battery last night and the car still wouldn’t get out of park. I was told that it might be a safety feature that’s locking it. Is there a way that I can turn off this feature?

Hhmm If I recall, some GM vehicles have a button that will release the lock'ed in park situation, don't know if the GA does or not. If it does it would be behind a little dorr somewhere on console I think

You may need to charge the battery for a while, turn on the key, see if there is any power at all, you may have burnt out a relay cranking it til the battery died. Also you have to get power to the brake pedal switch. The brake must be pushed to get the vehicle out of park.

Stupid idea, but have you tried to jiggle the steering wheel while turning the key? Sometimes they'll lock a bit if they're turned just right and prevent a key turn.
