Starting problems on my '89 GTS Corolla

My '89 Gts is giving me fits! I need to know if anybody has had similar problems. The starter quit so I had to push start the car. The second time I pushed it, it started running like shit. The tach was bouncing around & the "check engine" came on & off. When I got it home & up on ramps it wouldn't start at all. I swaped out the starter & it is still wrong. Now the cooling fans come on when the key is on & then all the electrical goes out when the ignition switch is in the start possition. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
