93 Escort Speed Sensor Problem

1993 Escort, 1.9 Lt., manual trans.
My son went to remove the speed sensor to check the fluid level (after swapping out the CV shaft), and only the top half of the sensor came out. The bottom half (with the gear) is still in the transaxle. We have not been able to get this out.
Took the car down to the tranny shop, they tried to remove it, but also failed.
Any suggestions on how to remove this?

The transaxle will more than likely have to come out of the vehicle and be disassembled...it really sucks to have to have it taken out, although it's most likely the only possible way to get it out without damaging anything.

some are fitted with a "roll pin" to secure the lower drive, its only a small thing and could be missed,a good pair of grips,or the right remover are needed to pull pin out.
