Okay... I know this has been covered a few times... but this time we need detail! Samhain... I know you are somehow connected to or know someone who does swaps and gets JDM engines... so I can use your input also!

In the near future I am going to install/swap in an RB series engine! I have decided this over the VG30DETT. I am still undecided and not sure which motor would be best. A friend of mine in Okinawa has suggested an RB25DET. I am not so sure about this motor power-wise, but I have heard that they can be built up to about 400HP on stock internals. I am swaying more toward the infamous RB26DETT with an RB25 tranny for RWD application... this motor rates at (over?) 300HP stock and the power potential is almost limitless! Can you imagine that beast... the heart of a GTR in my Z?

Well, enough of the wet-dream and into hard-facts! How hard is the actual swap? I imagine I will need to fabricate some kind of motor mounting? Which motor is best to work with? What motor would you pick? If I used the RB26 with RB25 tranny... which ECU would I use. These things confuse me! I know I can use my stck drive shaft... but how will my differential hold up? Is the clutch linkage the same? I also want to convert AT to MT!

My source in Okinawa can get me an RB engine/ECU/Harness and tranny combo fairly cheap (cheaper than eBay and other Stateside importers anyhow) and this swap may be done in time for next Summer. How does the whole customs thing work on importing engines? Anyone?

I don't know anything about the swap details, but I'd imagine that you'd have to fab some stuff...couldn't imagine it being a straight in kinda deal. I know one thing for sure, if I had the dough, I'd definately go RB26DETT...cuz that's just the mack daddy of all engines...I've seen unbelievable gains from the simplest of bolt ons...

wont you have a problem make it legal like for emmissions? i don't know much about the RB but if your engine was to break down would it cost you more to get it fix or can u use regular z parts?

I would assume Nissan parts would work...it is a Nissan engine. As for emissions, that depends on where you live. For instance, you can do damn near anything you want in Florida. There are no emissions laws down there to my knowledge. California is the exact opposite. I don't know how Canada works, but I'd imagine it'd be a similar kinda situation.

up here in canada... well, if you do get a smog check, it'd be by a cop on the side of the road if you have an extra loud exhaust, and for that he'd just look under the car for a cat-converter... hell, where i live, there's 6 weeks out of the year where they even have an spl machine to test the volume of your exhaust to see if it's street legal.. where do u live?

As for emissions... I heard that the RB25 is no prob in California (where I live)... The '26 on the other hand..... Good thing I don't really give a crap, huh? But I know people that run Skylines around here no prob... there must be some way to legalize them... but that is not what I had in question....

400 hp on stock internals for rb? i have seen 500 hp on stock internals on a vg and last. personally, i would never take out a vg30dett for a rb. it isn't a z anymore without the vg.

Stock on an RB25 that is... that is what I heard anyway. As far as the '26 goes I think they can handle about 500 or so easily.

You are right... It will no longer be a true Z... Frankenstien monster always appealed to me anyway! But this swap will combine my love for Z's and the Skyline... you have to look at it that way, freak...

Ok 1viadrft... I've got you covered.

RB26DETT may have a problem passing emissions in CA. I would suggest RB25DET for your Zed's application. You wont need that much HP to start out with. But 400+ to 500+ is very plausible for a stock internal RB25.

If you are planning on the RB26 the RB25DET's stock transmission bolts directly up to the RB26. The bell housing and bolt patern is the same. Been done many a time before.

This would be good for a drifting application because lower gear ratios, for the higher HorsePower of the GTR engine would lose traction much easier.

In order for this to work, you would need an R32 RB26DETT engine... Otherwise the clutch initiation is different (in the R33 and R34)

The swap itself is not too hard... Just get the Skylines X-Member, some fab work and it should go in ok. Custom radiator, driveshaft, cooling fans will be neccesary to drop in.

Granted, VG will be easier... But hey, anyone can do that!

You are talking about the rear differential right? Because I'm pretty damn sure that the RB and the VG have the same trans internals, just different bell housings.


As for the swap...well good luck. Hope you won't need the luck but hey, don't hurt :)

i think this swap will be very pricey....but if ya want to do it, do it. BUt i got one small question about the emissions thing....if i imported a vg tt engine would it pass emissions here in the usa most likely (georgia to be exact)?

Yes we have sold VG clips to Georgian customers... Passes with flying colors.

And im speaking of 300+hp engine application bolted up to a 250 expectant transmission gear setting...

More power would be layed down, causing traction to be lost more often.

If you are after traction, weld in the GTR's K-Frame with the rear-end... Will handle the power better.

ok. samhain. say i wanted to go the more traditional route and drop the VG30DETT engine in my N/a 2+2. i need to switch the trans over to a 5 speed too. what all do i need besides given. engine, trans, ECU, and how much am i lookin to spend in parts. i mean everything. i am really serious about this swap.

if you sent your car to z1 motorsports they can do it for 8k...personally i think it would be awesome to have a 2+2 tt here in the states. You would be unique and have a sleeper for people who know about 300zx.



6k for the tt transplant
2k for the auto to 5spd

Well think about it bro...

You will have to buy a Twin Turbo clip (I can supply one for you through my company.)

$3,000 For 5speed
$2,500 for Automatic.

The clip includes everything... VG30DETT, Transmission, ECU/M, EFI wiring harness... Everything that comes on the front of the car, you get. Including body panels.

Then after every is in, you will need a custom made driveshaft. I've been quoted at $550 for that particular setting.

Over all you will need about 4grand to get that project up-and-running.

Not me personally, my buddy has done an RB26DETT into a Zed.

He said it worked fine... Only thing was this:

He had to mount the RB26 up to an RB25DET transmission (make sure the RB26DETT is from an R32, otherwise the clutch initiation is a pull-type, instead of push-type.) Had to get some mandrel bent piping for the radiator fittings, new radiator fans, and a custom built driveshaft.

All in all it cost about... 6grand I believe.

Wes, How did he get an exhaust in there? I'm thinking about maybe going with the RB25 and staying AT... I'm not sure if I want to hassle with a conversion. Did the '26s come AT??? Also am taking that emissions into consideration... maybe RB25 would be better?

6 grand including clip?

i did research on the fuel pump. u cant use the stock fuel pump on the TT swap. the fuel pumps have different capacities. (the N/A has a number 14 and TT has a number 16). so im sure that it probably would be a good idea just to go ahead and change over the fuel pump when doin which ever swap u decide on. either skyline engine would be bad ass ( rb25det or rb26dett).

Ok, back from my computers jacking-off session (in other words I couldnt get online)

The exhaust would have to be custom mandrel bent back from the dump-pipe.

The RB25DET may be smarter than RB26. Emissions wise. And maintainence wise.

And yes, Automatic GTR's were made. The price veriation from RB26DETT clip to RB25DET clip is a VERY large gap. $5,500 to $3,200... Not a bad down size eh?

Just hit me up when you are ready. I have a buddy over on the West Coast who can do the swap for you if you are at all interested.
