the timing is checked by using a timing gun that you point at the crankshaft pulley to see if the lines on the crankshaft pulley is lining up with the ones on the timing belt cover. there are threes lines on the crankshaft pulley, one red and two white the red one is where it should be. the on before the red one is the mark for 2 deg advanced and the one behind is 2 deg retarded. then there is a pointer on the timing belt cover and as long as the pulley is in between the 2 white lines then you are within factory spec. now the way you adjust the timing so that the marks will line up with the pointer is by loosening the three 12mm bolts holding the distributor and then moving it back or forward. towards the front of the car is to retard the timing and towards the firewall is to advance the timing.
