i know this is the 4th gen forum. but what do you guys think about 5th gens. i think they might be a little better becasue swaps bolt right in instead of having to buy mounts and stuff. Which is a better platform for performance?

I like 4th gens personally. Yeah you have to buy mounts for them but I think they are way better looking. And 4th gens are lighter.

ya, there are advantages to both,
4th gen pros:
-lighter
-potentially cheaper (older)
-easier to swap legit (since you can use any newer engine, unlike a the 5th gen where you can only use newer from 92-95)
-simpler to work on (older, less electronic, OBD-0)
5th gen pros:
-more safety features (airbags, if that interests you)
-more feature on some models
-as you mententions, no need for aftermarket mounts for B series applications
-if you get an Si or VX you don't have to worry about vtec wiring
-newer car (slightly)
-you could get a coupe if thats cool to you...
after saying all that, I still think 4th gens are cooler, if your really into performance, spending a few hundred extra for some quality mounts shouldn't really bother you, and you will get a lighter car (that is if you go with a 4th gen)....

I like 4th 5th and 6th gen, I'd like to have a hatch from 5th and 6th also. For performance they are really very close with pros and cons for both as mentioned above.

4th gen isn't necessarily lighter than a 5th gen. VX hatchback was lighter than any 4th gen Civic I believe.

CX 5th gen - 2094 lbs
VX 5th gen - 2094 lbs
DX 5th gen - 2178 lbs
Si 5th gen - 2326 lbs
STD 4th gen - 2127 lbs
DX 4th gen - 2165 lbs
Si 4th gen - 2291 lbs
Depends more on the model than the year... if one cared much about the weight, seems like they would get a CRX anyways...

eh + - 200 pounds isnt going to matter if your going to build it up. I know the 100 pounds .01 in the quarter but seriously it isnt going to make that much differnce.

I am not too crazy about the SiR (in Canada, Si in the states) model, too heavy for the power......but ya they are pretty good....no 4th gen however :grinno:

You don't know that.
I know that 100lbs can make quite a difference, much more than .01... Don't believe everything you read. Lighter is much better.
But on the topic, I would say 5th gens are better because of availability and compatability for parts. I would like a 5th gen maybe when mines too rusty to drive on the road.

Yeah i was thinkin about makin a small fund and buy maybe a 5th gen. coupe or hatch...with air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, power windows, and such  . Dont get me wrong i love my CRX more than anything i have ever owned, but it sucks for dates, long drives and especially when it is hot. Nopi did a race wars thing last weekend and when i was in the staging lanes, i had my shirt off and over the steering wheel cuz it was too hot, and a hat on my shift knob cuz it was steaming, literally. It was all worth it in the end, i beat a RSX type-s with I/H/E :iceslolan , by .5 tenths of a second, I ran 14.6 & 97.2 mph...i can never catch grip.

its true that you have to buy motor mounts for an 88-91 civic for a b series swap, But....
88-91 OBD0 B16A swap... $1500
92-95 OBD1 B16A swap... $2250
can you say "ouch"?
I'll take $250 for motor mounts over $1250 for an OBD1 B16 anyday.
Although if i had the money, i would get a 5g hatch. I started off as one of the very first modded 4g civics in my town and now (2 1/2 years later) there are about 10 CRX's and 4-5 4g hatches and that is just my circle of friends :(
I could swap my entire turbo setup over to 92-95 and get a P28 ECU, chip it, run Crome or Uberdata and call it a day.
honestly, my 4g is fast (SOHC VTEC turbo @10psi with a comp cam), but it is a beater. About time to upgrade.

Having an std hatch for your first car sucks cause it's wimpy and slow and has vinyl seats. I'm not a mechanic in swaps and dont look to perform one soon. That's why this summer I'm going for the ex coupe of the 5th gens. It has features I can savor over and best of all, vtec. That's all that matters in my book.
