am i being ripped off???

well my 96 z24 cavy's been messed up for about a year now.
it seems like i put so much in to this car with it breaking and all i don't know if one more fix is worth it or just buy a new car already.

my problem was the temp would go above 195. i've had two new thermostats put in in about the last year..so i'm pretty sure that wasn't what was causing the temp to go up after 10 minutes of driving. also if i turned the AC on it would go down. so i figured the fan was not coming on.


well, i took it in the shop two days ago. still didn't get it back. supposivly the water pump was causing all the problems. it's going to cost me 400$. am i being ripped off???


also, i have a weird gas smell when the heats on. any ideas what that could be? haven't been smelling it now (don't use the heat in the summer) but i told my mechanic..i'm pretty sure it's not the water pump causing it.

Buy a water pump and do it yourself probably save yourself $300. Takes a little time but would be worth the investment.

true...i did the same thing...if you go to auto zone, buy one there and take back in the old one (aka the core) they will give you some money back...pretty easy to install, just time consuming..

You may want to convert to the "Green" coolant as well. There are a lot of problems with the red "Dexcool" type. Search around on google. Some people are getting GM to pay for repairs. Good Luck.

thanks for the info on the dexcool. i searched around and it seems many people have the same problems as i'm experiencing.

what do you mean by convert to the "green" coolant as well.
i thought dexcool is the only coolant you can and is recommended to use. obvisously it's not doing anything good..but will converting to the green coolant cause more problems?

No, converting causes no problems. I have several that were converted several years ago. No more problems. Just flush the entire system first. Don't forget the overflow bottle and its hose. I used one of those "Flush and Fill' kits they sell at wal-mart and most parts stores. Good Luck.
