Can anyone tell me how to remove the outside drivers side door handle on a '92 Regal? I have looked at it extensively, but do not want to break something if I don't have to.

Just curious, why do you have to remove it?

I figured it out. Took some time but I got it done. The reason I needed to remove it was the tab the door latch rod fit into was broke and I needed to replace the handle.

I have trouble opening my passenger door, I wonder if it's the same problem?

My door wouldn't open from the outside, but would from the inside. Does your door open at all?

Thats actualy a very common place problem with later-yeared regals. I've fixed my twice now (last person that broke it, was a smog test guy). I have learned to cope, leaving my windows part down, just so I can reach inside and unlock/open the door. I plan on replacing it again soon thou after I finish other work on my car.
The peice itself looks like it was made to break..

Mine is exactly the same, will open from the inside but not the outside. How hard was it to fix? High or low on the frustration scale??

It is not all that complicated. Try a "you-pull-it-yard" picked up my old one for $15.
And it isn't that its complicated, it is just a small undertaking. And after its fixed, just remember to be careful with that peice.

I have a 1991 Buick Regal 2 door and both door handles seem to have broken now that means i can't get into it...it is the stupid door handles that you have to pull down to open...is there any way to get into my car now?

Yeah, you need to break into it. Once you have done that, go to a GM deal parts place and order your new handle. Untill if you MUST use the car leave a window partly down so you can reach in and pull the nob from inside. Also make sure nother valueable is visible from your windows. And dang! this was a very old thread.

How did you remove it?

Just open the door, grab a allen-wrench set and a screw driver and start removing nuts and bolts and such. Till the thing comes off. If your handle has the illuminating ring around the key hole, becareful not to break the diode, peel it off real slow and gentaly.

I think he means you'd have to take the inside panel off the door. There's 2 main bolts hidden behind the handle you use to close the door to get the panel off and a few others around it. Then, there's push-in clips that hold that on too .It's best to disconnect all the electrical going to the panel and move it aside. Then there's a couple of bolts that mount the door handle-there's a little room to get at them. You'll probably have to move the seat belts if yours are mounted on the door. The main problem is lifting the door handle out after it is loose because the linkage is in the way. Hope you well.

Broke my driver's side off, fixed with glue, broke it again *sigh*. Still climbing in through the other side, but just in case that goes too, I un-bolted the rear seat. Climbing in through the trunk is a sure-fire way to get the ladies!

Thanks to everyones help, I managed to tackle the drivers door, next is the passenger door. Being locked out of my Regal outside of an all night grocery store in subzero temps and 2am had something to do with that fix. From there I'll have to fix the locks, which are both seized (Don't even start with the keyless entry rant). What kills me, is I also own a 71 Skylark, and after 34 years of use, all of the mechanisms work fine. I thought we were supposed to be moving forward in engineering and design, not backwards. Thanks all! Take note GM.

Guys, they make a much better replacement and you can buy it here:

As far as GM taking note of your 73 still in fine condition, they did and they didn't like it. That's why the breakable parts. People are supposed to buy new cars every 5 years or less. :uhoh:
