Scratchy Tweeter

I know this is a common problem but the search function was not working right when I tried it and I am a bit impatient because of how annoying it is. I just bought my car and the audio sounded ok till I adjusted the fade to be even (it was set to only play in the rear speakers) and as soon as I did the tweeter on the drivers side started to sound scratchy like it was loose or there was a tear or something, I tried to find a way to get to it but to no avail. Do I have to take the dash apart or is there an easy way I jsut looked over in my cursory search? Thanks in advance to whom ever cares enough to hellp me out.

no get a small flathead screwdriver and dig underneath the speaker and apply some pressure till u can get the screwdriver under it and it should pop right off. Your proably have a blown speaker like i do. Thiers no aftermarket exact size to fit it so you have to call mitsubishi or a mitsubishi dealer and order the factory part

Wow that sucks, I hope it's just loose or something, I bet a new tweeter from Mitsubishi would cost alot.

I took it out and found that it was not stock and was kind of shitty, the plastic disc around the cone that supports everything was cracked all over so I superglued it all togeather and it fealt prety solid. There was a tiny plastic cross that was meant to hold up the fabric dust/sand guard but it was broken and I think thats where most of the unwanted vibrations were coming from. I guess I will know in the morning if what I did fixed it, if not I will put it in but leave it disconected on the passenger side.

I wouldn't buy a stock one from the dealership, I would buy the JBL 220 GTO's. I have heard they are really good for regular use, not really that good for compatitions. http://store.yahoo.com/discountsonline/jblgto2midtw.html is the best site I have found for them. Heh speakers are apparently realy easy to install, didn't take any time to figure out that I could jsut pry them up and unplug them lol. And the fix i tried did a little to help but the plastic is realy fucked up so I switched the good one to the drivers side (so I can have it nearer to me) and put the other one in withought pluging it in (so it looks fine but dosent scratch). I'll check out that link and if the price is right I'll go for it.

Thourun - I have the same problem, I think these tweets blow really easily. In fact I just ordered those JBLs from Discount Jungle - thanks for the link Icecold.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find a nice graphic equalizer to go along with my new receiver? I gotta get rid of this stock deck soon.

Heh yea the stock deck on mine is going aswell but I think I will still use it unless I find a realy good deal. And Haaj, did you buy two tweeters? If you had to buy an extra one and you don't need it I might buy it from you if the one you need works out well.

I dont think you want one stock and one JBL. The JBL sound better and stick out of the dash a little.

Will they slip right in just like the stock ones? I didn't think they would be so cheap huh. might get them.

Since they blow so easily, how loud (or unloud) can we bump our music? Cause I wouldn't want to have to replace mine....

It's kinda weird that sometimes they would break and sometimes they wouldn't. In my other car, one of the tweeters was being scratchy too but when I took it apart, it was some kind of wire like touching or scratching something (it was awhile ago so I can't really remember). Needless to say, I just snipped the wire and everything was fine again. :)

They are stock little speakers, so they were probably a piece of crap in the first place. The rest of the components seem OK but if you want a tight system you will probably end up wanting new speakers anyway.... stereo components wear out and most of these cars are earound 10 years old now. Its only $50 (well, make that $73 after tax and shipping...) for tweets that are way better... 2-way tweeters with builtin crossovers... pretty dope from what I've read about them :) Of course, the downside is that they don't look stock anymore but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. At least the door and rear speakers are Infinity brand.

Oh yeah and Thoroun, nah it would look like crap to have one stock and one JBL, I'm installing them both :)
