Hi guys, I have a 76 El camino (350 w/all options) that has the power steering belt that slips when you turn the wheel. The wheel is hard to turn unless you're up to speed. I have tried tightening the belt and even trying a smaller belt to get increased tension with no results. Any clues???

You Can Actualy overtighten a belt and cause it to slip. Once a belt starts slipping, its a done deal. I would get a replacement, clean the pulleys ensuring there's no grease or oil on them. Some people like to use beltdressing and I have even heard or some taking sand paper to their pulleys. That last ones up to you! Most of the time it has to do with belt tention (to much or too little) or grease & oil on the pulleys

I had my belt snap off and I had lost power steering in my car for sometime. I found it really hard to turn the wheel, so I put my stock steering wheel back on which was also bigger. Now I just muscle my chevelle and it keeps my arms in good shape. :) The car also feels like it runs a little better at low rpm's. I don't think I will ever buy that new belt. Hell, I'm going to rip out the system today since its dead weight.
I will go with Bill's adive above. I have nothing to add. :)
