motor not starting

had the worst day today with my car . went into the city to get some car parts got them went out to my car and it wouldnt start:(my car is a 1990 2.0 turbo awd. it was 30 c or 86 f for you americans. it was turning over but not firing i unpluged and repluged all the wires and still nothing. was getting mad by this time and was giving it gas as i was turning it over but nothing pulled the plugs and they where dry so i puit them back in got back in and by this time it had been about an hour and 1/2 and it starts and i drove about half hour to a tire store to price out some new rubber on my way home came out and dam it would not fire again so i waited about 1hour and 1/2 came back to my car still wouldnt start pulled the spark plugs again still dry they look good nothing wrong with them. put them back got in and it starts . had to get gas on the way home and wasnt about to shut it off and have that happen again put high octane in got home shut it off and the dam thing started again .any ideas why this is happening . could efi have a problem ?

Didn't I respond to a post from you on this same subject before? Maybe not, I think I'm just getting old and absent minded. Anyway, my gut (and there's logical reasoning here too) says that it is either your fuel pump or your fuel pump solenoid acting up.

I would lean towards the fuel pump itself. It is similar to an old fan motor, or even an old headlight, as a comparison. Have you ever had a fan motor that would start sometimes by itself, but other times needed a little push to get it going? Ok then, how about a headlight ready to burn out that you can tap a few times and it will light up? You see where I'm gong with this, right? It's very difficult to diagnose a problem like this since it is an intermittent. I'm also not an advocate of playing "parts roulette", it just isn't wise to replace parts one at a time until you find the right one. However, if the car has a lot of miles on it, it really wouldnt hurt to put a new fuel pump on it.

Have your checked the ECM for any fault codes? It is entirely possible that there won't be any, even if the fuel pump is failing, but it certainly is worth checking.
