1996 Cavalier Top Speed

I have a 1996 cavalier 2 door. At about 88 mph with the pedal to the floor the engine studders and it seems it wont go any faster. Does anyone know what is wrong with my car? Thanks

um...I can save you a lot of money on your isurance and tell you not to worry about going faster than that.

I was just messing with you man. It was a joke. What kind of transmission do you have and what was the previous owner like? There could be alot of reason why it dosn't go faster than that. Your speedometer could be off. Your tires aren't the correct size for when it was orginally caribrated, your rev limter has a default, the throttle cable could have been moved are downsized...there is a shit load of possibilites man. If i was you, don't worry about it too much. It would cost you a shit load to try and figure all of the possibilites out. Thats the reason for the previous comment.

Cav's can do more than 95. Well mine can at least lol.

Got a 96 2 door with a 5 speed manual. No aftermarket parts nothin right know.

Got to 115 and the gov. kicked in. well i asume 115 becasue as you know the spedometer stops at 110 and as one click after it, i assume that's also where the gov was set.

~Note~ This was done going up and down hills, got to 115 going down, droped to about 108 on the ups, i assume it could do 115 on flat if it can do 108 on a decent grade

Also car rattles and shakes like a beothc, and there's alotta wind/road noise... its fun!

well i know my Z24 will do well over 130 MPH if i remove the governor, but i dont want to go that fast.

i'm never going to get near 115 i a cavalier again.

it was late, and i was dumb, still had stock tires. bad things could have happned

Well...my 96 Cavi LS can get maxed at 102mph...thats when that damn chip kicks in and hits under-drive.

But thats as fast as it got....and within 3 miles, ate 1/8 a tank of gas.

Fun times.

i have had mine up to bout 95 and still had pedal left. I have a 98 caviler.

I have had mine just about 100 mph, without any problems but with 100,000 miles on mine, Id dont want to kill it (Or me)

I cruise on the highway about 85ish.

I have and 01 4 door auto cavy and got it up to 100mph on the interstate without any problems.

Didn't take it any higher to max it out, but i'm sure i wasn't far away from the gov. kicking in.

I have a 96 2 door 2.2L and got it up to 95 no prob in 4th. Then the road started curving so i eased off.

Heh, My Cav has about 130k miles on it...almost 140k funny tho seeing that its still got that kind of speed in it atm.

I have a 2000 z and have it over 130 with out the govener.... and that is almost a regular thing to be over 115mph. the z is ment to be driven but i dont recomend you do that with out getting tires rated for those types of speeds they set the govener based on what the tire is rated for.

yeah sure dick weed. how the hell do you know you were going over 130 MPH cause the speedo only goes to 115MPH. The Z is not meant to be driven at those speeds nor should you ever travel at those speeds on a highway. One day you will be nothing more than a bloody smear on the highway. . .

My 96 Cav auto starts screaming around the 80 mark. I think that fastest I ever went was 90, and that was to pass two friggin slow 18-wheelers on a two lane road. I'm afraid that if I try to find the max, the engine will blow.

Now, I'm more than eager to find the max in my new 01 Tiburon 5 speed. The speedo goes up to 150. :devil:

i frequently drive on a fairly well paved, very open road outside the city and i enjoy pushing it to the gov. it'll cut at 109, before put some lowering springs and new shocks that damn near scared me; the thing not deciding which way it wanted to lean in the wind, and sloppy feeling rear end (maybe the old shocks).....anyway, after the stiffer suspension and less travel the thing sticks to the road and i think id feel pretty damn safe at 120 (you know, as safe as 120 can be...preferrably on a track)

i have a 97 z24 5 spd.... my governor hits in at 105 MPH exactly.... idk about all you saying you can go 115 and 130... my speedometer only goes to 110 and that extra space isnt even calibrated right.

as the name says... 92 2.2 auto, it will do every bit of 100 on a flat, hit the gov. down hill for shits and giggles once, not good on the motor by the way as your ECU cuts the fuel for a few seconds, bad, very bad! At those speeds aerodynamics change the way your car handles dramatically, and a little too much steering input could end it all. I like to stay under 85 myself. Be careful out there and be courteous to the other "drivers".

ive got my '00 to abotu 106 and it wasnt slowing down yet, any faster then that i coudl care less :)

c'mon guys almost any car can do 100 these days with ease My mothers 1.6L tercel did 110 and it was a 93. with about 150K on it but anyway I think the main thing is how fast can you get up to that speed.

i have a 94 3.1 5 speed and it will do 110 to 115 in 4th gear...its wicked and i love it...just messing around after the 1/4 mile i held her down til it hit the gov..it was a crazy time....but it shakes like a mother at that fast...but now shes parked for the winter and i have have fun doing stuff to it now...

Oh yea man.. I just added this monster fuckin jet engine to the top of my car and i go sooo fast i lift off the ground and fly away... i can kill a mclaren F1.. damn yo... cops can't ven catch me. Its the fastes mo fo'n car on the earth.....

i have a 90 2.2l 5spd and in 4th i can get up to 100 when im on the highway in fifth i can do 125 130 it vibrates real bad but it holds my spedomiter only goes to 85. but i have had it all the way back around to the 10 mark so i asume about 120 then after that. i dont think that much so i say 125 130 but i dont like going that fast. bullshit ya i do and another thing i know im going to get alot of grief from you old people that yell at people about taking of govenors and stuff. but in my state cops govern out at 90 so i have never goten a ticket on the highway. i know clasiccocjunckie is going to say something rude but thats ok if i kill anyone itl be me i only do these thing when im alone in my car and theres noone on the road that i can see

The state troopers car's are goverend at 90 mph?.. mmm i smell bullshit there...Either you live in the most hickish part of texas and everyone drives like an 80 yr old comming home from church on sunday, or you have your facts wrong. Come on, the state where George Bush the most controversy president of the United states is from only has cop cars doing 90 at most. I live in nothern NY and we have 10 Camaro intercept cop cars. That patroll I-81 from syracuse to canada and others... this road is nothing compared to those of texas.. I was doing a good 80mph to my camp one night and had a crotch rocket blow by me doing 100+ and about 20 seconds later had one of these black camaros flew by going wll faster than that... I just don't buy it...and about you going that fast..I'd like to see some hard evidence of you mods and a vid of your speedo that high.. other wise your just another high school kid on cardomain saying he owns a Supra.... lol....
