92 camry ignition problem

Have 92 camry w/ 2.2 automatic. Car turns over but doesn't get spark to spark plug. Pulled distributor cap and roter & distributor was in pretty bad shape so I replaced it. But still had no luck. Don't think the timing belt is bad because the roter is turning when trying to start. Don't know what else to check...coil? crank trigger? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat!!
Had the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor replaced today to no avail.
Still won't start.
Having it towed to shop tomorrow.
They said it needs a new distributor and may be more......Ouch!

Also check the wiring between the ignition switch and the distributor. That was the problem for someone on this forum with a 92 no start problem a few months back. They had replaced the whole distributor and still had the problem. They had it towed to a mechanic and he diagnosed the wiring problem.

I found the distributor on ebay: Mentions part number 19050-74040 or 74050 for fitment.

Called the dealer and checked my vin number for the part number and they gave me:
19050-74010
These are for the same model yr 93 camry 5SFE.
Would the ebay part fit?
The difference is $350.00 in price.

Dallas - They changed the distributor in the middle of the model year and there is a $50 difference in price between the new and older model distributor. I don't know what was changed, but something probably was. The two part numbers I found for the Toyota distributors (93 Camry 4-cyl) are 19050-74010 and 19050-74030. The numbers you have are probably for aftermarket distributors or a different year Camry and all bets are off on whether they would work or not. More likely not work than will work.

This part number thing is a little confusing and I can't answer your question. I have seen your part numbers assigned to your car on the internet as OEM numbers. Maybe the difference is whether it comes with some associated parts or not (distributor cap etc.).

Check the 30 amp AM2 fuse under the hood, if it is blown then you have a short most likely in the Condenser inside of the distributer... Heat over time will take this condenser out... Should be able to buy it at your local Toyota dealer.... My '92 Camry did the same thing after blowing a lower hose & getting HOT.. Bob

Bmaintz,
Thanks for the tip. If that is the problem, how do I replace the condenser?
I put new spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor and still doesn't start.
Is condenser reachable from the top after taking the cap and rotor off?
Thanks,
D4R

Do you have plug wire spark (use a screwdriver close to engine)..??
Check the AM2 30 amp fuse, if it is OK then the condensor is OK.... If blown then remoe the Dist. Cap, then remove the rotar, then remove the snap-on cover..... You will see the Ign. Coil with the + & - connections..... On the right side of the ign. coil take off the nut & pull off the 2 wires.... One will be the Condensor, take a ohm meter & check for a short, you can also use a 12 volt bulb probe tester, hook alligator to ground & touch the Condensor lead, if the bulb lights up you have a Short.... You have to remove the sensor plate (2-screws) first to get the Condensor out... The Condenser has a mounting screw on side of Dist.... You will have to regap the Sensor Plate when you put it back together.... Easier if the Dist. is pulled off of the engine... Bob

Thanks Bob,
When this torrential rain stops, I'll get out there and do it.

The location of the AM@ 30 amp fuse ...
As you look down at the fuse assembly...
It is located near the back next to Horn relay & Headlight Relay... There are 3 fuses in a row, the inside one is the 30 amp AM2, then 15A Haz-Horn, then EFI 15 amp on the outside... Turn your ignition ON & probe with test light on both sides of fuse... Bob
