Question on Vegimite

background: thanks to growing up in the 80's I developed an obsession with Australia from things like Men At Work's 'Down Under', Midnight Oil, the Crocodile Dundee movies etc etc. About 5-6 years ago an aquaintance was traveling to New Zealand and Australia...I begged tham to bring me back some Vegimite as my young impressionable mind had remembered it from the Men At Work song "he just smiled and gave me a vegimite sandwich"
so I tried the vegimite on a cracker and almost died....it was the worst thing i had ever tasted!!!! unfortunately my obsession with the land down under ended promptly with the vegimite incident(only to resurge after seeing the movie Romper Stomper and falling in love with Russell Crowe)
so the point of this post.......
What is vegimite? Do people actually eat it?!?!? Does it actually taste good? Can someone explain this to me...through the laughter, that is, as I realize I must sound awfully silly. But its something that has bothered me since the vegimite incident.

Heh....that is a funny thing to post about!! Still - no worse than perky Nana's I guess:D :D
Anyway I eat vegemite everyday and your post just made me realise that I have no idea whats in it. It does taste damn good though especially:
- On toast
- On crackers
- In vegemite and Cheese sandwiches. (Toasted or untoasted).
Funny that you didn't like it...I just grew up with it. Must be an acquired taste I guess, like how I cant stand wine and coffee makes me nauseous.

Vegemite is great on toast (especially vogels toast) :licker: I can only take it in small doses though as it’s really strong.

Here ya go. This is what's in Vegemite. It's pretty similar to Marmite really.
Vegemite:
Yeast extract, salt, malt extract, colour(caramel), vegetable flavours, vitamins (niacin, thiamine, riboflavin)
Notice how salt is one of the ingredients at the front of the list. That's why it tastes so salty. :)

:) It's one of those things that you've got to be in the mood for otherwise it's too sickly to have for breakfast. :)

Vegemite started off as a by product of the beer industry (yeast) and grew from there. Most of us in Aus grow up with it and have aquired the taste............If you want to try it then spead a small amount very thinly on buttered toast and you will like it.........you can increase the amount gradually untill you are completely addicted:D

Ya beat me to it!
Its basicly the black shit left in the bottom of the tank after they've brewed the beer, someone dicieded it tasted good and so but in a jar and started selling it. :D
Its not recomened in large doses untill your used to it, start by spreading a very very very small amount on bread, barely enough to even see it. If you still dont like it, then spread it on some toilet paper and leave it in someones bed, or bag etc. :D
Marmite :apuke: It beef extract, so I dont even want to know what pile of offal its made from. :apuke:
Now how many of you guys have had Vogels straight from the bakery oven! now thats nice. :D
A wee tip for the real Vogels lovers: Keep it in the Fridge, the humidity and our lovely hot summers take a good day off its self life. Also dont buy it from Dairys or Gas stations which close up overnight and leave the firdges on with out any ventilation, again it gets really hot and ruins the bread.

Vegemite = Concentrated Yeast Extract :D
and, as has been previously posted....hot toast, plenty of butter, and the thinnest scrape of vegemite - it's the only way to eat it.
btw...vegemite and cheese go together pretty good too. At one time, Kraft actually sold vegemite cheese slices with the vegemite already in it...I'm not sure if they still sell them or not ;)

proper way to eat vegimite/ marmite:
toast a piece of bread.
get a small amount of vegimit/ marmite on knife.
spread vegimite/ marmite on toast.
throw away toast and eat something else, both of these products are disgusting:apuke:
