Keyless entry on 2001 grand prix

Any Grand Prix experts please help!
I just got a 2001 Grand Prix GT and come to find out AFTER buying it, this particular one didn't come with remote keyless entry from the factory. It has power everything (doors, windows, trunk, mirrors, etc)...just no remotes.
Soooo....reading through this site I came across instructions to program a remote for use with the grand prix. Tried for an hour one evening to get the car into program mode to program the remote (it is the correct remote also. Verified by the numbers on this site and by a GM dealer). Couldn't get the car into program mode.
Is there something (electronic module or fuse or something?) missing that I can add inexpensively to "add" this missing option without paying some 3rd party place to install it? I'd like to go OEM if possible, and the local shops here want to sell me some Valet or Viper system for like $300 + a $75 module to bypass the computer for remote start.
I also only got 1 key with the system. The salesman offered to get me another for $39. Can I get one cheaper than that and program it myself?
thanks and any help is appreciated.
and please, no comments on the "you got jipped by the place you bought it from". I got the car for $8900 and it was in perfect condition w/60k miles...so the 1 key and missing remotes was not a sell-stopper here.

How did you find out after buying it that it didn't have keyless entry? The best way to find out is to take your VIN to a GM dealership and let them run an options list on the car. Although, mine didn't show up keyless entry, it has it...I'm thinking it might have been standard on the '99 GTP's. Check your RPO codes, located on a sticker on the inside of the trunk lid. If you see AU0 listed on that sticker, then you've got a reciever, and just one of those touchy cars that won't go into program mode easily. And did you make sure you pulled the Mall PGM fuse before trying to put the car in program mode?

Thanks for the quick reply!
I found out b/c my salesman (who was going to get me a couple remotes) ran the vin through a GM dealer. I checked the sticker and couldn't find AU0 on it.
Is there a way to get the "missing" part(s) and install them myself? Or would I be better off going with a 3rd party remote system?
ps, I did pull the mall pgm fuse.
would it be possible that I have the necessary equipment but the AU0 isn't listed?

It's possible if keyless entry came standard on the '01 GT. Like I said, AU0 isn't on my sticker, but I have keyless entry. I think it came standard with the '99 GTP. But if the salesman ran the VIN through a GM dealer and it came back without keyless entry, my guess would be you don't have it. I don't know if it's possible to get an OEM keyless entry system that you can install yourself.

Well, I found the "missing" equipment online from a parts dealer. the receiver is $69 and the wiring harness for it is another $26. I opened up the dash to see if by some chance the hardware was there and it wasn't.
Soooo....does anyone out there know if I install this receiver and wiring harness, will it work or would the computer have to be re-programmed???? I'm hoping that it would just work and the computer uses a sort of Auto-detect feature to see if the RKE hardware is there.
:EDIT: Ok, just did some more searching and found the Body control module which is located under the left hand side of the dash. Right above where the hood release is. Mine is labeled 10427830, which is apparently the module w/o keyless entry. However, there is only one GTP version which would explain why you had keyless entry even if it wasn't listed.
So, looks like I'll start searching to find out if I change the body control module will I have RKE. I found the BCM w/RKE for $117. If I can just swap that and program my remotes...that'd be sweet! First mod to my GT...been modding computers for years...why stop there?

I just picked up a 2001 Option Guide on the GP....and remote Keyless entry is standard on all GPs.....
So unless you got a fleet GP I bet you have it

It must have been from a fleet. b/c the body control module that's installed matches up with the part number on the GM/Pontiac parts list as being w/o keyless entry.
do you think that simply swapping that out with the part that DOES have keyless entry will allow me to program my remotes?
btw, what part of STL are you from? I'm in Cape Girardeau, about 2 hours south. I grew up in STL area.

Does anyone know if I swap the BCM with one that has keyless entry then I'll be able to program my remotes? Or will I need more parts (I couldn't find anything else on the parts list related to it)?
Thanks for the help so far.

ok, someone told me that even if I replace the BCM with one that supports the keyless entry, that I would have to get the BCM programmed with the car's options and also still have to get the keys programmed via a Tech2 at a dealer...
can anyone verify this? I just don't like the aftermarket remotes...I think most of them look gay.
thanks,

Tech2 does not program remotes

Tech2 does not program remotes
so if I had the other BCM would I still need a dealer to program the remotes and BCM? Or can I just "pop it in" and follow the instructions to enter program mode?
I'm very tempted to get the other BCM since I found it for $88 new. I can get one locally for $75 but it's from a salvage yard. I'd rather get one new though for $13 difference.
