Well about a week ago my wife and I got a '94 Grand Marquis with about 80,000 (old person) miles on it. My wife just went to Florida to pick the car up and went to put gas in it to drive it to Oklahoma. She noticed that there was a little bit of water sitting inside the fuel door and proceeded to fill the car up. She got back in and went to reset the trip odometer and the fuel cell read-out thingy said "CO". After looking in the owner’s manual it said to take it to a dealer. Does anyone know what this could be? She's sitting at the dealer right now so if time is a little critical. If it matters it's the LS model fully loaded from what I know. Thanks in advance!

Hi I have just bought the same GM as you all was fine untill I filled it with petrol now I have the same problems as you.
Did you find the problem? I would appreciate the solution.

The "CO" means Circuit Open.

If your GM was built prior to 94/01/01 (check driver door label near door latch for month & year of build), the problem is caused by an intermitent connection between a spring and contact in the fuel guage sender unit.

Problem is documented in TSB 95-2-3.

You will need to replace fuel gauge sender asssembly with an improved design to correct problem.

Ford replacement part number is F3AZ-9275G (verify number as my copy of TSB is blury)

Shop time for repair is .9 hours

If you have never done this - fuel sender is in fuel tank. This means you will need to drive car until tank in almost empty & raise car high enough to remove fuel tank. This is not a fun cold weather job.

I would just live with minor problem until tank requires replacement.

Cheers!

I was wondering how 2 people who actually own the car even call their mercury a general motors, last time I looked ford motor division and general motors were seperate companies, but the way they buy each other today...

Since this is a Grand Marquis forum, it is unlikely people will mistake GM abbreviation to be General Motors.

Using shortcuts on internet is just a fact of life - get used to it.
