Replacing Torsion bars

Has anyone had to replace their Torsion bars yet? I have a 1996 Chevy
Astro AWD and had a torsion bar break on me. My brother also has a
1996 Astro AWD and had both sides break on him. I was wondering if
this is a common occurrence with the 1996 models.

yes this is a common problem, if you look at the original torsion bars you can see that they were originally set into an adapter, at the rear of the bar, that had the bad habit of collecting and holding water and the torsion bars would then rust and break, if you replaced the bar(s) with the original style you will be doing it again, the GM replacement torsion bars are redesigned without the water collecting adapter, are stiffer and about 6inches shorter. The redesign requires the replacement of both bars and the adjusting blocks they anchor into.
