Transmission problems?

I am having difficulty putting my car into the reverse gear. Its not making any sort of grinding noise like it would be a transmission problem. Has anyone else had this sort of problem with their 95 GST. I am thinking its my shifter bearings, however, my friend said it could be the transmission since the reverse gear is usually the first to go. I am confused? If anyone could help me out that would be great.

Hmm I don't know if it is a problem necessarily. I have the same trouble sometimes. It takes a few tries to get the shifter into reverse; like, it doesn't go in all the way, so I have to take the clutch out, then back in and try again. Usually goes in on the second or third try. I'm not sure if this is normal, but at least you aren't the only one with the problem ;)

You know, I just can't understand Mitsu. for their cheap ass trannies. I had a 98 Spyder with a very cranky tranny that would just refuse to shift smoothly, even after clutch changes etc. Sometimes I couldnt get it into first gear on a stop sign! My 97 GST does the same thing. And would you beleive my bro's 96 GST has the same tranny problems. All Eclipses before 99 had a host of unpleasant tranny and crankshaft issues, though they have gotten better over time. Hondas have silky smooth transmissions...too bad Mitsu didn't steal from their parts bin! (Though I am GLAD Honda didnt make the Eclipse...if they had, our 210 stock GS-T's would've been 180 hp @ redline VTec crappers, and the AWD GSX woudlve probably been dumped!)

anything will shift smooth if it only has to handle 95 hp lol

I would have to say that a DSM tranny isn't that bad. You've really got to have something good to handle AWD launches. I haven't heard anything about breaking trannies locally, or really read about any. On the other hand, I know several people that have trouble with WRX trannies, and online they are said to be weak. As for not being smooth, I wish mine were smooth too but I'll put up with it.
I sometimes don't go into 1st or reverse on the first try.

I had the same exact problem with my 96 GST. It only got worse, after some time of ocasionaly not going into reverse or 1st on the 1st attempt, first gear was completely gone, it would go in fine, but then grind and kick out as you let the clutch out. I ended up having the transmission completely rebuilt. I have pictures of all the gears and Syncros that were replaced if anyone is interested

Snowbrdr1122: Does your car shift better now? Im worried about my tranny too...it doesn't shift smoothly at all...I have to wince and hope that the gear finds itself with every shift! First gear and reverse gear are a pain in the a$$. The gear just doesnt seem steady...it wobbles in its slot, refuses to engage at times, grinds, etc etc. Oh and I have a new clutch. So is it the tranny or just some little parts that need adjusting/teaking or replacing? I know nothing about trannies.
