Stuck Shifter

Started today and could not get out of park. It is four door 98 escort, automatic, shifter on floor. Have been working on body for several weeks with car parked in drive.
Any suggestions?

Did the shifter lock disengage when you pushed on the brake? If it didn't there is a bypass that you can insert a screwdriver into to get it to release. It is located next to the shifter under a small cap. Just pry it up, put a flatblade screwdriver into it, push and it should disengage the park. If the shifter moved but it didn't come out of park try rocking the car manually while it is in park while trying to move the shifter, this sometimes works. Hope this helps.

Pulled the cap, used the screwdriver and I was able to shift. Thanks for the tip. Is this an area that needs lubed, or just an occasional glitch?
I'll keep the screwdriver in the glove box.
Thanks

Usually just an occasional glitch although sitting for prolonged periods of time can cause it to happen.
