Transport Canada is very picky, so it's best to check with them first.
For example, I wanted to import a 1991 SE-R into Canada from the US.
It's on their black list. Why? Because it has door-mounted seat belts. I pointed out that many other cars sold in Canada have door-mounted belts, like the early 1990s Saturn. No deal.
I pointed out that it has anchors on the b-pillars, and the NX2000 has its belts mounted there (the car uses the same chassis and engine). Belts could be fitted to the b-pillars, and it would have exactly the same configeration as a car that was already sold legally in Canada.
No dice.
So phone them and find out. You don't want to be stuck with a car you can only drive on the track, and that's it.

If your importing directly from Japan, wouldn't the LHD and RHD problem be the biggest headache first?
