Manual Tranny pops out of gear

I have a 95 4runner with 85K miles and a 5-speed tranny. Lately it's been popping out of third gear, especially when it's cold. I noticed that the shifter doesn't seem to move all the way forward in 1st and especially 3rd gear. I heard that the shifter adjustment arms are inside the tranny and that it has to come out to be adjusted. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mike

Their are shift balls and detents inside the tranny that keep it from popping out of gear. They are probably worn or you might have a bad internal spring, etc. You will need to remove the tranny and have it repaired. It could cost a lot to repair due mainly to labor. If you remove the tranny yourself and take it to a shop it will save you a bundle.
