That doesnt exactly explain which car is faster......have to factor in weight, gear ratio, tires.....i could look at specs all day long but does anyone have a real world example?

Actually, the 5.3 has 295 hp and 330 lbs-tq. the 4.8L has 285 hp and 295 lbs-tq however.
Just go to www.chevrolet.com and see for your self.

I do know that my 5.3 only lost to a HEMI by 1 truck length, the hemi was 2wd, and of course, im a Z71 w/oversized tires...

I here that a lot. So I'm starting to assume that the Hemi must be overrated (literally, in horsepower/torque). I can remember when the 1994 Dodge Ram's came out and there was so much hype over the 360 and its 240 horsepower. Well my 1992 Silverado out run one of those (may not have been 94, but it was that body style) and it was 2WD, and mine is a 4WD. My point is my truck is rated at somethign like 210 hp, so one would assume 30 more hp, RWD, less weight, would out run my truck, but it never!
I've read before that Dodge does overrate their engines, don't know if its true, but from real world experiences, its believable.

yeah i think the HEMI's are way overrated...i have never actually raced one tho, I've pulled up to 2 so far (I've only had my truck for about a month) and revved but neither one even responded. So I have yet to see what kind of real life power they have......

The guy I raced thinks his truck is the baddest ass truck in the state. I hate to burst his bubble, but a 93K mile 5.3 can spank his 20K mile HEMI ass..if I ever get my last mod...

What about the SS Silverado vs. 2WD Hemi Ram (single cab btw) comparison MT did awhile back?? The SS was either 500 or 800 pounds heavier and it run 14.99 vs. the Hemi Ram's 15.11
Both engines are rated at 345 hp, and anybody taht knows anything about racing knows that a lighter vehicle with the same HP engine will out run the heavier vehicle. That's why I say the Hemi must be overated, becuase a 2WD single cab truck (5spd auto as well, SS is just 4 spd auto) should beat an AWD extended cab truck.

I actually saw a run between a 2004 Dodge with the Hemi, and a 2004 Silverado SS at the track last weekend. It was only an 1\8 mile track, but the Silverado had him by about one length. The SilveradoSS ran a 9.55, and the Hemi ran right around a 10.00 flat.

Yeah but your talking about two completely diff setups. hemi 3.93 gears vs SS 3.73. Hemi 2wd(alot of wheel spin) VS SS AWD (no spin)
Hemi 340hp and 375fttrq VS SS 345hp 380fttrq. And hemi 0-60 6.8sec VS SS 0-60 6.6 sec you tell me that the hemi is overrated how??? Hemi SC 4867lbs VS SS 5250lbs? With the amount of whell spin and the ability to spin the tires with larger gears i hardly think that the hemi is overrated you just go by hp and trq and wieght but what about the drive train! Anyone who races also knows this buddy!

The SS uses .410 gear ratios actually, and is mated to a 4-spd automatic transmission. The Hemi Ram gets a 5-spd auto, add 20 inch rear tires, and its not gonna spin as much as you think.
Now the saying is for every 100 pounds you loose, you gain 1 tenth in the 1/4 mile. The Hemi Ram weighs nearly 400 lbs less then the SS Silverado, which according to MT does 14.99 in the 1/4 (Car and Driver has it at 14.80, I've never seen one run at a 1/4 track, but I do know what one will do in 330 ft, and that is 6.60-and that would be doing somewhere along the lines of 60-65 mph, so I say the magazines must be spot on for this truck). Now, use the "old saying" about weight and 1/4 mile times, and the the Hemi Ram and its 345 hp, RWD (which is preferred by drag racers) should be doing 14.59 in the 1/4, or close to that, not 15.11.
So either the Hemi is overrated at 345 hp (or GM's Vortec 6.0 is underrated), OR DC is loosing alot more of that power through the drivetrain (and AWD as you know looses more power through the drivetrain then a RWD vehicle will).

I defintatley see what you're saying but i think the GM is underrated because i run a 15.2 in the 1/4 in auto 4 and i have about the same Hp as the hemi and i wiegh in at 4776. Maybe GM isnt giving engine power ratings nor wheel ratings maybe this is flywheel power??? Only thing is i know that the hemi cant be overrated unless my mods gave me an outrageous amount of power that i dont think can be acheived through regular bolt ons

What do you have and what are your modifications??
Well, GM did underrate the LS-1 Camaros, so maybe they are underrating the LQ-9 Vortec 6.0. It has to be one of the two, becuase you know a lighter vehicle with the same hp will outrun a heavier vehicle. I'd like to see it in a RWD single cab truck. If it will run high 14s in the current SS, it would probably run mid 14's in a single cab truck. I think for 2006 GM is making a RWD SS Silverado, short bed, single cab, and the 6.0 gets boosted to 385 hp. That should be interresting.

Well! That would be BUNCHES of horsepower. Good luck with it, lol. I'd say with the mods you already have, your engine probably has somewhere like 320 hp. I know the FIPK intake claims 26 hp, but they never actually give what they claim. Either way, you know what yours will do in the 1/4, lol. I assume your truck is an extended cab truck, and I bet an extended cab Hemi Ram could'nt do 15.2 in the 1/4.

I had a 99 with the 5.3 and I don't think it was anywhere near what they rated it at. I thought that it was on the weak side although it was stronger than the 318 that I had in my ram cc. I haven't driven a hemi powered ram so I can't comment on how it performs but all the new truck engines make their hp/tq at higher rpms than they used to.
01Blackerado
06-30-2004, 11:10 AM
Yep thats for sure on the RPM statement. As far as your 99 pickup the stats for that year are actually lower than 2000+. 99 was rated at 275hp and 320 trq and now its up to 285hp and 325trq. Also the wieght diff. the 99 weighed about 200lbs more than the 2000 and about 250 more than the 01 but now the weight has gone back up from the 2002 + and it keeps getting heavier

You know another thing that is sucking power from the new gm trucks is the quick cool ac system. It placed a tremendous drag on the engine at low rpm's and would make my truck a dog on hot days. I ended up getting a superchips tuner which corrected most problems and gave me my power back.
