I have a 2k sunfire that needs a new engine, ive had this car for a while now and i know what the stock engine can do for speed, its a great and fast car with the engine but now that it died it got me thinking on what i can do to spice it up, i know about the 3800 engine conversion but thats way out of my price range atm im just wondering outside of that what can i put in that will be better then the 2.4l engine that was stock?? thx for the reply's

the only other options are the 3.1L, 3.4L and 3.8L, there may be a 2.8L also but all these need the wiring harness changed etc etc. Your best bet if you can't afford the conversion is to get another 2.4 and spice it up. I personally am leanin towards the 3.8L supercharged for mine but i can do it myself. Theres alot you can do with the 2.4's though. Another option is the supercharged 2.2ecotec or JEGS sells a potent crate engine for the sunfires. But the cheapest way with little hassle is to stick with the 2.4

Hello,

I see that you know quite a bit about this I have a 2001 cav which is the exact same as the sun, I'm afraid my 2.2 is a piece of crap. All through it is running fine, I'm just wondering about these engines 2.4, 3.1, 3.4, 3.8, or 2.2 supercharged. Which one do you think is the most reliable out of those engines. All though performance is nice its not as necessary as reliablility. I do know the 3.1 were pretty good engine, and if that would be the way to go then, would I need to weld new mounting brackets etc? (I use to be a welder so no big deal doing that stuff) I'm also wondering about the conversion kit to drop a 3.1, how much is that $$$? I would imagine its all different wiring but is there any info you can send me on it thanks for your help....

First off for Sunfired, The 2.2L engine is not worth thinking about unless you are getting it for free, which you are. the only issue is I believe the wiring harnesses may be different between a 2.2 and 2.4 so thats something to look into. Otherwise the gas milelage isn't bad it's better than the 2.4's, and of course horsepower being generous is about 120, I'm just gonna warn ya the 2.2L is on par with the 2.4L they are NOT reliable, you give that engine a little goring and something will break. So be gentle. LOL

For Swamps: The 2.2's are junk as you know. The 2.4's rank up there with the 2.2's (POS). The 3.1L is a good engine, but I think they disappeared in the 90's, so then your swappin out a newer engine for an older one. The 3.4L is a decent fair powered engine but i've heard more than enough horror stories about them. The 3.8L is in my opinion the best engine of the choices provided. I've talked to many people about this and everyone i've talked to loves them. "INDESTRUCTABLE" so they say. check this 98 cavi out http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/526752
The company which did this 3.8L conversion is also doing the conversion to my buddies 99 cavi for $11000 eeeverything included. Just read along in that site and you'll notice he tells you most everything of how to do the conversion. But after checking that out you'll want the 3.8L. As for the 3.1L, i'm not completely sure how to do it but the 3.1's were in cavis up until 94, so i'm sure all you need is a new wiring harness and make engine mounts for the suitable positions. Snoop around at www.cardomain.com and you may come across the 3.1 in one of the cavis.

thanks for all the info you guys put in. I wish GM could have put more into Quality then quanitity, on making there engines. As now I just let the wife drive the car, this will pretty much be last GM vehicle, back to Honda again, all though I'm not a big fan of Honda, I can't complain about the reliability of there cars.

take it easy guys.
