Vtec just lets the engine breathe in the higher rpms sustaining its torque through the whole power band.

v tec is a valve trane system that swiches between a low duration cam wich decreases valve overlap so you can make low end power not contaminate the intake charge and idle And a high duration cam that increases valve overlap, and screams at high rpm {scavanger afect}

your all wrong...

im gonna finally set it straight, FINALLY!

vtec is not any of said stuff above. its really magic!

im not kidding. pure magic run by the same leperchaun who is behind that lucky charms cereal! hes running a global pyramid scheme with honda and general mills. no joke

No, it doesn't switch between cams, it switches between cam lobes.

In a nut shell a lower duration cam lobe runs for economy under XXXX rpm, when it hits XXXX rpm, the vtec solenoid opens and fills a passage way with oil, which locks the rockers and engages the secondary cam lobe, which is of higher duration, and not economical, but makes more power. That is the magic of vtec (or any variable valve timing system) it (they) allow for normal operation and economical fuel consumption, while maintaining a sporty top end.

If it switched between cams we'd have quadrouple overhead cams. :icon16:

i didnt say cam shafts i said cam. a cam SHAFT has lots of cams on it. ie cam lobes 1 DOHC vtec cam SHAFT has 12 little cams on it thats why its called a cam shaft. out of thoes 12 little cams 4 of them are high duration.

Technically yes, but for practical purposes when saying a cam 99.99999999999% of people are refering to the camshaft as a whole, as in " I bought a CTR intake cam", that doesn't infer that I bought one cam lobe, now doesn't it.

True. When people say cam, they mean cam shaft.
